The White House Correspondents Dinner 2013 videos are burning up YouTube right now. The annual event is prized among regular folks who don't follow beltway battles because of the A-list celebrities and AA-List humor that comes at an event described by some as the "nerd prom." This year featured Conan O'Brien as host, a bit of an auspicious honor for the late night showman since it's always tough to be funny in the wake of a national tragedy like the Boston Marathon Bombings. If anyone can find a way it's O'Brien, who hosted the White House Correspondents Dinner in 1995 in the wake of the Oklahoma City Bombing.
The White House Correspondents dinner for 2013 saw President Obama dish out both self-deprecating slams as well as cajole his Republican political opponents.
"I look in the mirror and say I'm not the strapping young Muslim Socialist that I used to be," Obama said, referring to the so-called "birther" movement that frequently portrays the President as a Kenyan-born, Muslim socialist. Obama also used the White House Correspondents Dinner to throw some jabs at Republicans too.
"Some folks still don't think I spend enough time with Congress. 'Why don't you get a drink with Mitch McConnell?' they ask," Obama said. "Really? Why don't you get a drink with Mitch McConnell?"
Along the same lines, Obama vowed to take his "charm offensive" on the road to "a Texas BBQ with Ted Cruz, a Kentucky bluegrass concert with Rand Paul, and a book burning with Michele Bachmann."
"My 'charm offensive' has helped me learn some interesting things about what's going on in Congress. It turns out absolutely nothing," Obama said.
