In "Downton Abbey" season 4 episode 7 we are once again faced with the return of Lord Gillingham and his servant Green. This is an unfortunate turn for Anna whom we can see weeping in the online preview. The return of Green and Lord Gillingham clearly raise memories of the rape for her, on top of that she fears that Bates will take his revenge against Green and murder him. Despite the assurances of both Anna and Mrs. Hughes, Bates has never let go of his suspicion that it was Green who was responsible for Anna's rape and not an unknown assailant. With Green back in the house again it seems almost inevitable that Bates will discover his responsibility. While this will have the benefit of getting justice for Anna, it is an open question of what action Bates might take. If he kills Green then he may be hung as a murderer.
In "Downton Abbey" season 4 episode 7 in the online preview we can see that the formidable Dowager Countess appears to have fallen ill. We really hope It is not fatal and the show writers do not write her out of the show because she is a beloved character for her cutting remarks. Meanwhile for some reason it appears that Robert needs to go to Amerca, something he does not want to do. It's not really clear why, as far as we know only Cora has relatives over there though Mary did spend some time over in America while waiting for her scandal to blow over. Tom hasn't left to America yet either, he's involved in some farming venture with Lady Mary who has taken a dislike to Mr. Napier's friend, Mr. Blake who is apparently a socialist like Tom.
In "Downton Abbey" season 4 episode 7 we will also see the plot centering increasingly on Lady Edith. Lady Edith slept with Gregson prior to his trip to Germany where he is attempting to get German citizenship. She hasn't heard from him in a while and she has now discovered that she is pregnant. It seems that her Aunt Rosamund's warning about her affair with Mrs. Gregson could have been well warranted. A woman having a child out of wedlock in this time period was not well considered. Taking into account the fact that various women throughout the series who have ended up out of wedlock have not been treated well, it seems that this may end badly for Edith, doubly so if Gregson has jilted her and does not return to marry her. On the other hand as we saw with Lady Marty's scandal, being a member of the wealthy upper class does make you immune to a great many things, so perhaps Edith will do all right in the end.
To add to the controversy in "Downton Abbey" season 4 episode 7 we can also see that the show is broaching race issues. In the last episode Mary saw Rose kiss Jack, the black jazz singer who caused scandal when he appeared at "Downton Abbey". It's not clear where this plotline is going, could Rose pull a Lady Sybil and elope with Jack? That doesn't seem that likely yet, but who knows where it could lead. In the previous episode of "Downton Abbey" season 4 we saw the following developments in temrs of the plot.
June 1922. Alfred gets a place on the Ritz cooking course when a winner drops out, and leaves Downton. Carson is not keen for Molesley to replace him, even when he begs for his job back; Mrs Hughes softens his heart, and Molesley is re-hired. Edith is worried that there is still no news of Gregson, and is told by her doctor that she is pregnant. Bates and Anna go out for a meal at a posh hotel, where a snooty maître d tries to bar them; luckily Cora is there too, and ensures that they are admitted. Isobel finds the item the Dowager Countess thought her gardener had stolen down the side of a chair; she is ready to berate her some more, but is deflated when the Dowager reveals that she has already apologized to the young man, and re-hired him. Rose arranges for the band from the jazz club to play for Robert's birthday; Carson is scandalized to see Jack, the black singer, but later calms down. The Earl and the family are also surprised to varying degrees, but deal with it with their customary good manners. After the party, Mary sees Rose and Jack kissing in the servants' quarters. Government inspectors arrive to check the estate: Mr Napier is another old friend of Mary's; his companion Mr Blake is an acerbic socialist, who clashes with her - terribly politely, of course.
"Downton Abbey" season 4 episode 7 will air to UK viewers via ITV on Sunday on November 3. UK viewers also have the option to watch it the following night online. U.S. viewers will have to wait for PBS to air the new season of "Downton Abbey" on January 5. US viewers will be treated to a recap preview that will air on Sunday, December 1 on PBS. That should tide any American users that aren't following the show on ITV through semi-legal or illegal methods. The plot is picking up the pace as there are only two episodes left before this season is over. We may see the Green plotline involving Anna's rape finally get closure, potentially with Bates getting revenge on him, or turning him over to the police. We will have to watch and see to find out what happens.
