"Walking Dead" season 4 episode 1 spoilers came out with an AMC behind the scenes look and an earlier trailer released during Comic-Con 2013 which gave us a pretty detailed look at what to expect from the premiere episode. "Walking Dead" season 4 episode 1 premieres Sunday, October 13th 9:00 ET on AMC. The compelling trailer is below:
The trailer crams a lot of spoilers into a few minutes, but our first impression is that "Walking Dead" season 4 episode 1 will feature a lot more world-building than earlier seasons. The group is more settled now, we can see the prison is fortified and the residents of Woodbury have been incorporated into the group. The children are being taught to use knives and other preparations are being made for battle. It feels almost like a medieval fortress under siege during a war, which is what the prison is in many ways. The prison has become more of a small town now, compared to the fairly isolated sanctuary it was before. Rick doesn't appear to be the sole leader and benevolent dictator anymore. We can see a council and some sort of decision-making process happening with some of the new characters taking part.
One interesting spoiler we see in "Walking Dead" season 4 episode 1 is more organized walkers. The walkers are more bunched together, are attacking in greater number and are focusing on the weak points of the prison. Somehow the walkers are organizing themselves or someone is organizing them. There are signs that someone has been feeding them and someone on the inside allows the walkers into the cell block leaving 12 dead with two more killed in "cold blood". All the new residents from Woodbury are not on the side of Rick's group. The Governor is also still out there and we get the sense that he is responsible for at least some of the bad things happening in the prison.
It shouldn't be a big spoiler but the residents of the prison are hard pressed in "Walking Dead" season 4 episode 1. They say that they can manage for some time, but not for long. Herschal who appears to have gotten a prosthetic leg even says that some people are saying they might be better outside the walls of the prison than inside. It's hard to argue otherwise when we see Tyreese has been blinded in one eye. We also don't see much of his sister, which makes us suspect that she's dead, particularly given Tyreese's new and more reckless behavior where he is seen wading into a swarm of walkers to engage them in hand-to-hand combat.
We do get a sense that there is a pretty big new threat that is going to force the group out of the prison in "Walking Dead" season 4 episode 1. According to David Morissey, who play The Governor he offered a large spoiler about the new threat:
"There's a whole new threat in this season that we have to deal with which you get to know about. This new threat is the thing that overall is the thing for us. The zombies are the same threat that they've always been, but with this added extra that makes the world a very, very dangerous place. And people start to sort of react in different ways ... It's not a threat you're going to be able to kill very easily. So it's something that happens within the world. Another thing. And that is very dangerous. It's very dangerous and I think when you see it, you'll ... there's a lot of identity with it, for us in our world. You'll get it when you see it. Each person reacts to it very differently."
If the new threat in "Walking Dead" season 4 episode 1 isn't him and isn't just the walker, then it has to be a new group of human survivors. In the trailer we are treated to scenes of the group sweeping a big box department store using military style tactics and assault weapons. We also see them raiding an abandoned army camp to get military hardware. The word "war" is also openly mentioned by one of the new characters. It seems like the group is clashing with a new faction of humans that may want to drive them out of the prison. We see them looking at maps as they attempt to find a new location to go to. "They've been trying to make it more like a home versus a prison because no one really wants to live in a prison," said former "The Wire" actor Chandler Riggs, who plays Carl Grimes on "The Walking Dead."
So one major spoiler that we can establish in "Walking Dead" season 4 episode 1 is that the group will be driven out of the prison this season. In one of the final scenes of the trailer, we see them on the road when a voice comes on the car radio and offers sanctuary, "Those who arrive, survive," the unknown person says in the radio broadcast. Robert Kirtman, comic-creator and executive producer offered some insight into the plot twist, "We're making everything look different and new and unique for this season. I think there's going to be some really cool new elements thrown in that will shock you," said the co-creator and series executive producer.
Overall, based off the spoilers and the trailers, it looks like "Walking Dead" season 4 episode 1 will kick off one of the most exciting seasons to date. We're particularly enthused because Scott Gimple is writing the premiere episode. Gimple was responsible for some of the greatest and most emotional plot twists of the past seasons, such as Sophia coming out of the barn as a walker. We can expect great things from him for "Walking Dead" season 4 episode 1.
What do you think of the spoiler that the group will probably leave the prison in "Walking Dead" season 4 episode 1?
