"Vikings" season 3 release date will likely come in 2015. The popular History Channel series has been renewed for a third season allowing the historical drama to begin production this summer. Based off the time it took to get season 2 we can anticipate that "Vikings" season 3 release date will be around February or March 2015. That does feel like a fairly long time from now, but it is good to know that the show is continuing to remain popular and actually growing in popularity and fan base as more viewers tune in to the show. Like season 1 and season 2 of "Vikings" we anticipate that season 3 will also have 10 episodes which should give us another hefty slice of battles, conquests and action. Hopefully we will continue to see the Viking raids expand in England as well as other parts of Europe like France, where the Emperor Charlemange rules.

The "Vikings" season 3 release date will likely be heavily anticipated based on the viewership numbers for the present and previous season. "Vikings" season 2 has gotten 3.4 million total viewers, 1.7 million adults 25 to 54 and 1.5 million adults 18 to 49 making it the dominant show in the Thursday 10pm time slot for the history channel. There has been a 51% bump for the first two episodes of "Vikings" season 2 with 5.1 million total viewers and a 60% increase in important demographic for adults 25 to 54 with 2.7 million viewers and 18 to 49 with 2.5 million viewers. Given numbers like these its no surprise that History Channel has ordered another 10 episode season to be produced. "Vikings" is History Channel's only original scripted show currently, though the TV channel has started making forays into other popular series like "The Bible" and "Bonnie and Clyde". "Vikings has taken viewers by storm and has established itself as one of the most compelling, visually stunning dramas on television," Dirk Hoogstra, EVP and general manager for History and H2, said in a statement.

"'Vikings' has taken viewers by storm and has established itself as one of the most compelling, visually stunning dramas on television. With its large, passionate and loyal fan base, 'Vikings' has cemented History firmly in the scripted series genre, just as we are the leaders in reality television. We are incredibly fortunate to have such an enormously talented cast and crew led by Michael Hirst whose intricately woven storylines vividly brings the unknown, epic world of these Norsemen to life. Season three promises to immerse viewers even deeper into the exploits of these fearless warriors who are willing to risk it all for conquest and power."

When it comes to the "Vikings" season 3 release date we are likely to see more action for Ragnar, played by Travis Fimmel. According to Dirk Hoogstra, "With its large, passionate and loyal fan base, Vikingshas cemented History firmly in the scripted series genre, just as we are the leaders in reality television." In season 3 we now find Ragnar wielding more power than before as he rules as Jarl of Kattegut (barring recent spoilers from season 2 episode 4) and he is allied to King Horik of Denmark having just invaded the lands of King Ecbert of Wessex. It will be interesting to see if History Channel continues to restrict the "Vikings" to just England and Scandanavia or widens the map and shows the raids that spread to France, the Mediterranean, Sicily, Russia and Byzantine Empire. Some have made comparisons to "Game of Thrones" and while the History Channel doesn't have the same budget as HBO (you can tell in the battle scenes with the relatively small numbers of men) the show has proved popular and there is definitely an overlap between the fans of the two shows. Hopefully we will begin to see more scripted shows by History Channel.
