The "Vikings" season 2 premiere date has been confirmed by the History Channel to be Febuary 24, 2014 at 10:00pm. The History Channel has also said that they will be makings some casting changes to "Vikings" season 2. The biggest one will be for Bjorn, the son of Ragnar who will be aged up and played by "Hunger Games" actor Alexander Ludwig who will play the older Bjorn. Other stars that will be joining "Vikings" season 2 are Linus Roache from "Batman Begins" who will play King Exbert of Wessex. The Kingdom of Wessex is already confirmed to be the new major enemy of Ragnar and the Vikings in season 2. Bjorn's recast is particularly interesting since he just came of age as Viking warrior last season and will now grow to be a swordsman and warrior.
In addition to some of the casting changes the "Vikings" season 2 premiere date for the first episode will feature themes centered around, "season two brings crises of faith, of power, of relationships. Brothers rise up against one another. Loyalties shift from friend to foe, and unlikely alliances are formed in the name of supremacy. Ragnar's indiscretions threaten his marriage to Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), tearing him and his beloved son apart. Plots are hatched, scores are settled, blood is spilled...all under the watchful eyes of the gods." The clear reference is that Ragnar, role reprised by Travis Fimmel, has allied himself to King Horik of Denmark, being played by Donal Logue from "Sons of Anarchy" season 6. The King and the Jarl are about to go to war and it seems that Ragnar and Rollo will have to come to terms with each other or face the prospect of having to kill each other in battle.
When the "Vikings" season 2 premiere date airs we can expect a total of 10 new episodes that will pick up where the last season left off. Ragnar is now an Jarl in his own right allied to King Horik, and now he want to continue his expeditions and raids to the West and conquer the kingdoms of England. However, first he must face his brother Rollo who has betrayed him and joined the rival Jarl. The brothers are shown clashing in a sneak peek trailer of "Vikings" season 2 in which it appears that Floki, played by Gustaf Skarsgard is killed by Rollo, played by Clive Standen. The second "Vikings" season 2 promo trailer depicts Ragnar's tumultuous mental state and hearkens back to his vision of Odin as a raven. Ragnar will, presumably after defeating or coming to terms with his brother face the Kingdom of Wessex and the King Ecbert who is widely regarded as a more powerful ruler than the Kingdom of Northumbria.
Watch a sneak peek of Season 2 of Vikings, coming in 2014.
When the "Vikings" season 2 premiere date comes in February 27, 2014, Ragnar will also have to come to terms with grief and personal loss. While he has gone and been unfaithful to his marriage to Lagertha, played by Katheryn Winnick with Aslaung played by Alyssa Sutherland, his daughter died in the plague. Ragnar will have to come to terms with that along with the distance from his son Bjorn who will be with a new stepfather who is raising him harshly. Lagertha herself is set up to become an Jarl in her own right. Meanwhile the religious elements between the Viking religion and the Christianity of Athelstan played by George Blagden will continue to be interesting themes, particularly since Rollo has converted to Christianity. When "Vikings" season 2 returns to the History Channel with its premiere date February 27, 2014 at 10pm then you can expect the series to start with some bigger and bloodier battles. This will be particularly interesting since Wessex is a larger and more powerful Kingdom than Northumbria and better positioned to take on Ragnar and the Vikings. King Ecbert of Wessex is also a cunning ruler who has been trained in the court of Emperor Charlemange. He will be a true match for Ragnar.
