Has your Twitter background image disappeared or is just not working? Have you tried to customize or reset your Twitter wallpaper only to find it's gone and has been replaced by an ugly grey wilderness? Fortunately there's a fix for that so you can get your custom background back. Check out our simple tutorial for restoring your Twitter wallpaper.
UPDATE: 1:15 pm EST -- This fix for the Twitter Background problem appears to be patched or disabled by Google and is, therefore, no longer working.
On Monday, Twitter users sadly discovered their custom picked wallpapers and images seemed to have disappeared or were just not working right, leaving in their place a dull grey background instead. Sadly, this is not a mistake. Twitter is actually removing the option for users to see their custom background images and wallpapers on the Home and Notifications pages, though the background still appears on Tweet pages, list pages and collections pages. The decision to remove custom backgrounds from Twitter profiles has enraged and frustrated many users to say the least.
Why is my Twitter background image not working?

Fortunately, there’s already a fix for that. Thanks to an enterprising German coder names Mika, there is now a developer Chrome Extension on Github called “Twitter Background Restorer ” that allows users, with a tiny bit of geekpertise, to restore their custom background images and wallpapers on Twitter and fix that grey mess they’ve replaced it with.
For some, visiting GitHub and messing inside of page source may seem a bit daunting, but we’ve taken a moment to put together a step by step tutorial (with pictures) guiding you through the process of installing and using the Chrome extension to restore your Twitter background image to its rightful place. Check it out below.
Twitter Background Images And Wallpapers Gone Or Not Working? Here’s How To Fix It Using “Twitter Background Restorer” Chrome Extension
Step 1: Download Mika’s "Twitter Background Restorer" extension here
Step 2: Type chrome://extensions/ into your Chrome Browser (You MUST use a Chrome Browser for this to work!)
Step 3: Drag the .crx file you downloaded earlier onto the webpage. If it doesn’t install then click the checkbox that says 'Developer Mode' in the upper right hand corner of the extensions page. (I had to drag the .crx file to my desktop to get it to install.)
Step 4: Once the extension is installed click on 'Options' button below the extension. It should open a page with some fill in boxes – the first titled “Image URL”
Step 5: Paste the URL of the image or wallpaper you want to use as your Twitter background in that box, check the box if you want it to tile and save! Now just refresh your Twitter page and the background should appear!
(If you want to use the same image you currently have set on your Twitter page, but you don’t have the url, see the instructions below for finding the URL.)
How To Find The URL of Your Current Twitter Wallpaper/Image
Step 1: Go to your Twitter home page and click on one of YOUR tweets. Below a “Details” link should appear. Click that. You should now see that individual tweet and your custom background
Step 2: Right Click on the page and in the drop down menu, you should see “View Page Source.” Select that. In a new window the page source will appear.
Step 3: Search through the mess of code by pressing Control F/Command F (or search the edit menu for the “Find” option) and you should see a little search box appear in the upper right hand corner of the page.
Step 4: Type in js-user-style-bg-img to go to the section of code with your background image url (this appeared around line 1234 for me)
Step 5: A couple lines of code below that, you should see a line that has this: background-image: url( -- Inside the parethesis will be the url of your current Twitter background image. Copy and paste that into the “Twitter Background Restorer” Chrome extension from earlier. Save it and refresh your Twitter page to see your background appear.
