Forever. That's right, folks: Tom Brokaw & Lindsay Lohan are officially on the outs.
Tom Brokaw, Lohan, and journalism started their spat this week when Brokaw announced that he will not go to the Correspondents' Dinner this year, because Lindsay Lohan ruined the event. As Brokaw told Politico, "the breaking point for me was Lindsay Lohan. She became a big star at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Give me a break." According to Brokaw, "there was more dignity at my daughter's junior prom than there is.. on C-SPAN there."
Brokaw hasn't actually gone to the event in years.
Unlike Tom Brokaw, Lohan and many other celebrities and glitterati attend the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner. And that's what Brokaw has a problem with. The correspondent, who has been working since before the Watergate era, asked, "Why do we think to have a successful evening you have to have Donald Trump as your guest of honor, for example, or Lindsay Lohan?" It defeats the purpose of an event originally intended for actual journalists and correspondents reporting on the actual White House.
Lindsay Lohan ruined the White House Correspondents' Dinner not through anything she actually did, but just by being there. Even the New York Post admits that the worst thing she did was smoke a lot, go to the bathroom, and leave a very generous tip. What exactly is the problem here? According to Brokaw, "I also want to have a good time," claims the veteran newscaster, but the Correspondents' Association needs to "have a kind of self-policing instinct" instead of "saying 'We're Versailles. The rest of you eat cake.'"
But it seems like Tom Brokaw has been eating sour grapes lately, not cake. That's because Tom Brokaw discriminates against his celebrities: he has no issue with big stars whom he happens to like. Brokaw said that "Claire Danes is not someone I'm talking about. She's a big deal. And you can bring in George Clooney.... He's a serious guy in Hollywood." So celebrities are fine, as long as they are celebrities palatable to an older man like Brokaw.
Tom Brokaw, Lindsay Lohan, and The White House Correspondents' Dinner don't have long to fight. The event is this weekend, Conan O'Brien is headlining, and luminaries such as ScarJo, Tracy Morgan, the entire cast of "Modern Family," George Lucas, Kevin Spacey, Steven Spielberg, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and even Jaime Lannister are all expected to attend. Rumor has it that socialite celebrity Barack H. Obama will attend as well. But not Tom Brokaw. He'll be sitting at home watching C-SPAN.
