The Super Smash Bros. 4 release date is still murky, and lead game developer Sakurai only recently began working on the 4th generation Nintendo fighting franchise. As for the title, we've heard a few interesting rumors. Read on for more Super Smash Bros. 4 release date news and rumors.

Believe it or not, the Super Smash Bros. 4 release date was actually intentionally delayed by Nintendo! That's right, lead Super Smash Bros. developer Masahiro Sakurai was told to put the massively popular fighting series on the back burner while he worked on a passion project, "Kid Icarus: Uprising."

According to Video Games Blogger, Nintendo started discussing the Super Smash Bros. 4 release date soon "after finishing Brawl and once the 3DS released." However, President Satoru Iwata was worried that "push[ing] Sakurai into another Smash development cycle for fear of tiring him out on the series."

Here's more from the gaming blog:

"Now that the game is almost finished, Iwata feels it is time for him to get back into development on Smash. But this time, they have the new Wii U home console to consider. The Smash Bros. creator wants to make an HD videogame, as we previously reported, so Sakurai must have been very excited to hear that the Wii U is an HD console.

"Given that Nintendo now has two new systems (Wii U and 3DS) Sakurai knew the only way to go was to develop the new Smash Bros. game for both systems, and make them cross-compatible. But he is not the type of developer who wants to simply add new characters and new levels and call it a day, he wants to truly do something new. Typical Nintendo eh."

As for a specific Super Smash Bros. 4 release date, there's not much to report, barely even a rumor. However, we wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo has the game ready for sale in time for the 2013 holiday shopping season.

So what will Super Smash Bros. 4 be called when the release date arrives in 2013 or even 2014? Don't count on Nintendo following the pattern they've set with "Melee" and "Brawl."

Back in 2011, a leaked photo sparked rumors concerning the Super Smash Bros. 4 release date and the possibility that it might be called "Universe," according to 1up. However, this uninspired name sounds more like a placeholder than anything else.

We've also heard rumors that the upcoming release date will introduce the world to Super Smash Bros. Memories, which ZI learned will be a 3DS only title:

"According to the rumor, Wii U's Super Smash Bros. will focus on modern characters while 'Super Smash Bros. Memories' will star retro characters including Donkey Kong Jr., Ridley, Pac-Man, Takamaru, Mach Rider, Dig-Dug, and Stanley the Bug Man. The source also claims that Nintendo 3DS's Super Smash Bros. title will be released holiday 2013."

However, this Super Smash Bros. 4 release date rumor also has it's flaws. Two different versions of the game seems unlikely, considering Video Game Blogger's report that the new title will be "cross-compatible" between the Wii U and the 3DS.
