New updates on "Star Trek Into Darkness" reveal identity of Alice Eve and Benedict Cumberbatch's character.
"Star Trek Into Darkness," the sequel to the 2009 film "Star Trek," has been in the new recently, since a stunning trailer was released earlier this month. While details on the movie are very scarce, we're slowly finding out more and more about some major characters, and its giving us some hints into what the plot of the movie might be.
Alice Eve was featured in the trailer twice, once when she was screaming, and the other when she shared a look with Captain Jim Kirk, which hinted at a potential love interest for the Captain. Now, it has been confirmed that Alice Eve will be playing Dr. Carol Marcus, from "Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan." Carol Marcus was Kirk's ex-girlfriend in the "Wrath Of Khan" and they even had a son together, David. Assuming J.J. Abrams and co will be following a similar plotline, we could be seeing the beginnings of a relationship between Captain Kirk and Dr. Carol Marcus, and see what happened for Kirk to choose the Enterprise over his relationship.
As for Benedict Cumberbatch's character...ugh. We've heard virtually nothing about further about his character, the reason he's seeking "vengeance," or anything else. But, the official "Star Trek Into Darkness" still photo claims that Benedict Cumberbatch's characters' name is John Harrison. That doesn't help us one bit, considering the name has been changed to protect the characters' identity. But, Roberto Orci, the co-writer and producer of "Star Trek Into Darkness," has said that Cumberbatch will NOT be playing Gary Mitchell, despite what actor Karl Urban said earlier. He also said that the character is from Trek canon and fans of the show and movies will be familiar with him, which leads us to suspect that Cumberbatch will be playing Khan.
However, there is some rumors that indicate that Cumberbatch might not be playing Khan OR Gary Mitchell, as we originally assumed. iDigitalTimes spoke to a source that claimed that Cumberbatch would be playing a twisted version of Jean Luc Picard, the captain of the USS Enterprise in "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Remember that wormhole that brought back an older version of Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy? Well, it seems like that wormhole may have changed Picard's life, and made him go from a honorable and kind-hearted captain, to a psychopath bent on destruction. We also hypothesize that Cumberbatch could be playing a Michell-Picard hybrid, where Picard, played by Cumberbatch, is given God-like powers, similar to Mitchell, and declares vengeance on Spock and Kirk for destroying his life. But this is all merely conjecture; our source couldn't confirm anything beyond the fact that Cumberbatch could be playing Jean-Luc Picard. If this is the case, it will certainly settle the debate between Trekkies, who have been arguing for years over who the better captain is, Kirk or Picard.
What do you think? Would an evil Jean-Luc Picard be a suitable villian for "Star Trek Into Darkness?"
