The Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One 2 "M8" and LG G Pro 2 are the three big flagships we have confirmed will be launching during the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona. There is also an off chance that Sony may launch the Sony Z2 or LG might come out with the LG G3, but those rumors are unlikely. Ultimately the center stage of MWC 2014 will be the clash between the three tech giants as they all jockey to launch their newest flagship, taking advantage of the best new technology in terms of both hardware and software. Given what we know about them so far, which of the three new flagships will triumph at MWC 2014?
Samsung Galaxy S5 Specs, Features And Everything We Know:
The Samsung Galaxy S5 is the most thoroughly leaked of all three devices, it even has an officially launch date with Samsung Unpacked 5 scheduled for February 24. Samsung is keeping the Samsung Galaxy S5 launch toned down compared to its raucous Samsung Unpacked 4 launch that saw the Samsung Galaxy S4 released. In any case the Samsung Galaxy S5 is already set to be the flagship premium smartphone that all others will be measured against.
In the case of the Samsung Galaxy S5 it will boast the highest specs we are expecting along with the new Magazine UX and a seriously revamped TouchWiz UI. The Samsung Galaxy S5 specs that we have on fairly good authority (for the primary premium mode) so far include a 5.25-inch display with a 2K resoloution, a Exynos 6 octa-core or a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor depending on the variant. It will include 3GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel rear camera, a 3.2-megapixel front facing camera, a 3,200mAh battery and storage options for 32GB and 64GB of storage with a microSD card slot. The Samsung Galaxy S5 will run Android 4.4 KitKat with a changed UI with a totally revamped TouchWiz and Magazine UX. The new UI looks kind of like a combination of Windows Phone, Google Now tiles, and HTC Blinkfeed. A new UI running with Android 4.4 KitKat should result in serious performance improvements.
When it comes to other possible models of the Samsung Galaxy S5, there are plenty of discrepancies with what to expect. The main variant looks like it will have an all-metal body, at least according to the most reliable leaks. We also know there will be a cheaper plastic body budget variant which will be modeled off the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and have a faux stitched leather back. Other two variants which have been confirmed include the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom and the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active. The fingerprint scanner also seemed to be a confirmed feature but the latest Samsung Galaxy S5 cases which are showing up do not show a fingerprint cutout on the back anymore. That suggests that Samsung has either scrapped the fingerprint scanner on the back or found a way to put it on the front, possibly on the screen itself.
HTC One 2 "M8" Specs, Features And Everything We Know:
The HTC One 2 "M8" ompared to the Samsung Galaxy S5 the leaked specs and features we've heard about the HTC One 2 "M8" has not been nearly as impressive. For one, its full name isn't even known, with some suggesting that it might be the HTC One+ rather than the HTC One 2. Overall it looks like HTC is only planning for a modest bump from the HTC One, compared to a serious next-gen leap like the Samsung Galaxy S5. In terms of body and design the HTC One 2 "M8" looks similar to the HTC One, it has an all-metal body and a similar design. The major changes are that HTC will finally eliminate the capcative buttons, making it the first HTC smartphone to get rid of them. In addition to that leaked pictures of the HTC One 2 "M8" show that the device has an odd dual sensor camera of the back. Earlier speculation had suggested that this would be a fingerprint scanner, but it looks like it's a second camera.
The HTC One 2 "M8" has also been confirmed to be getting larger display. The actual size isn't known but according to a Bloomberg report the HTC One 2 "M8" display will be larger than the 4.7-inch HTC One but smaller than the 5.9-inch HTC One Max. The HTC One 2 "M8" will also boast a Snapdragon 805 processor. The major improvements are the improved processor and the improved HTC Ultrapixel camera with the dual sensor. It's not clear exactly how that will work but it will likely result in a better quality picture. Some additional specs that have been suggested are 2GB of RAM which is likely, a 2,900mAh battery and potentially a 5-megapixel front facing camera, one of the largest sizes we've seen on a flagship so far. It's still not clear if HTC is considering a 2K QHD display or will be sticking to 1080p. When it comes to HTC its best to err on the side of caution when it comes to specs. The company didn't try to match Samsung pound for pound when it came to the HTC One Max (compared to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3) and there's no reason to think they will attempt it here. Finally the HTC One 2 "M8" will run Android 4.4 KitKat with either Sense 5.5 or Sense 6.0.
LG G Pro 2 Specs, Features And Everything We Know:
The LG G Pro 2 is the least known of the three flagships we are anticipating for MWC 2014. LG announced the phablet successor to the LG Optimus G Pro not so long ago but didn't give many details about it right away. Over the past week LG has slowly let some details about the LG G Pro 2 slip, for instance it will include a 13-megapixel camera sensor with optical image stabilization "plus". This will combine software tweaks with the hardware to produce better images. The camera is also getting an improvement which will allow it to shoot video 1.4 times slower for slow motion recording, it will include continuous burst shooting mode for up to 20 pictures, 4K video recording with a resolution of (3,840 x 2,160). The front facing camera will be the standard 2.1-megapixel camera that we are used to seeing on most flagships.
Other information about the LG G Pro 2 specs is harder to come by. In terms of body the LG G Pro 2 will have back facing power and volume rocker buttons and presumably the double tap to wake feature which is useful on devices with larger screens. The LG G Pro 2 will likely see an uptick in screen size, the latest rumors suggest a 6-inch 1080p display, a serious bump from the 5.5-inch display on the LG Optimus G Pro. On top of that the LG Pro 2 processor will be a Snapdragon 800, potentially a Snapdragon 805 is possible. Some rumors are going even further than what we've heard so far and suggest that the LG G Pro 2 will have a 5.9-inch Quad HD (2560 x 1440) 2K display with a fingerprint scanner. Overall all three flagships look like they will have major specs to compete against each other, but the Samsung Galaxy S5 by far has garnered the most interest.
