Snapchat 5.0, codename Banquo, has been released for iOS on the Apple app store. The update adds many interface adjustments and extra animations to the popular photo-sharing app. Snapchat, based in California, lets users share photos and video that automatically delete themselves after 10 seconds or less. The service has become immensely popular, with over 150 million photos shared a day. While many say Snapchat's only use is for sexting, the nature of the app makes this hard to prove. They're probably right.
Previously the Snapchat interface had functioned perfectly well, although it left a lot to be desired. The UI felt very rigid and. frankly, pretty thrown together. The new interface features many thoughtful flourishes, such as the new updating animation that changes colors, new artwork starring Snapchat's ghost mascot and other smooth touches. As for function, Snapchat gains sliding navigation abilities similar to Instagram, as well as the ability to quickly view users amount of points and best friends. Overall the interface has a flatter look, similar to what we may see in the upcoming iOS 7.
As for the reasoning behind the code-name Banquo, TechCrunch provides the explanation,
"Banquo is a character from Shakespeare's Macbeth who begins as an ally to Macbeth, and is with him when the three witches give their prophecy: that Macbeth will be king, but that Banquo's son would also be king, presumably after Macbeth.
When Macbeth ascends to the throne, Banquo wonders if Macbeth was involved in the murder of his predecessor, King Duncan. Macbeth becomes paranoid and suspicious of Banquo, and ultimately orders that he and his son Fleance be murdered. The climactic scene of the whole play comes when Banquo's ghost haunts Macbeth during the feast."
