Taking a brief step away from Mojam 2, Mojang team member Jens Bergensten has announced that the "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update release date will be coming in roughly two weeks, sometime during early March 2013.
Since having a lengthy discussion about the "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update during MineCon 2012, much of the information about the upcoming title update for Mojang's hit sandbox game was released to the public via weekly (and occasionally bi-weekly) "Minecraft" snapshots and accompanying weekly explanation from Nathan "Dinnerbone" Adams. That all changed with Saturday's tweet confirming the upcoming launch date for the "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update.
Of course, given the snapshots' weekly release schedule, Mojang is hardly keeping the more than 9 million "Minecraft" PC players in the dark regarding the development of the "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update. But, since announcing a delay of the "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update's original January 2013 launch window, Mojang has remained relatively mum on the subject of a release date.
Still, with bug fixes making up the majority of recent "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update preview snapshots, many began to wonder exactly when the next major "Minecraft" update would see the light of day. Fortunately, someone at Mojang gave Bergensten the all-clear, and "Minecraft" players now know they'll only need to be patient for a couple more weeks. It's unclear if any more "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update preview snapshots will be released before the game's upcoming title update is released sometime during March.
So, what can "Minecraft" players who haven't been keeping tabs on the weekly snapshots look forward to when the "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update is released next month?
In addition to a major lighting engine overhaul, the "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update will also bring a number of changes to the game's Redstone mechanics, including giving advanced Builders the option to use varying strength Redstone currents in their designs. Mojang has also added several new blocks, new ore, scoreboards/leaderboards for multiplayer servers, mobs' new fear of minecarts, scaled the difficulty of existing mobs, and fixes for a number of the game's most commonly-occurring bugs.
The a number of users from the /r/minecraft sub-reddit have also created a helpful thread to track all of the changes that are expected to be introduced when the "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update is released next month.
Have you been playing each week's new "Minecraft" snapshot while waiting for the release of the "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update? What are you most looking forward to with March's major "Minecraft" update?
