Mac OS X El Capitan: How To Fix Stuttering Bluetooth Audio Problems, Wireless Speaker & Headphones Lag
If your OS X El Capitan Mac seems to be having stuttering and lag issues in regards to wireless Bluetooth audio, don’t worry, you are not insane. This has been a recurring problem with Mac OS X going back to Yosemite, and while there is no solid fix out yet, you can try a couple things and see if it solves the Bluetooth audio problem.
First off, try using the Bluetooth Audio Explorer that comes as part of Xcode’s Hardware IO Developer Tools to figure out placement issues and resolve other Bluetooth problems that may have to do with interference. Things such as Wi-Fi networks and microwaves have a real possibility of being the cause for all your misery, and Xcode’s Bluetooth Audio Explorer will help troubleshoot those Bluetooth signal strength problems.
If Bluetooth Audio Explorer and repositioning turn out to be a bust, try opening up Terminal and entering sudo defaults write com.apple.BluetoothAudioAgent "Apple Bitpool Min (editable)" 53 before hitting enter. This should help stop choppy Bluetooth audio that skips. Alternatively, you could try using this script (located at the bottom of this page) that will give all associated Bluetooth audio processes a higher system priority.
If neither of the above work, try opening up Terminal and entering in sudo killall coreaudiod before hitting enter. This should restart the processes that deal with Bluetooth audio and help some of the stuttering and lag issues.
If your Bluetooth audio problems are still not fixed at this point and your wireless headphones or speaker still sounds like they're dying a slow death in a bog, it’s time to whip out the big guns: Resetting your OS X El Capitan Mac’s PRAM and SMC.
This is a good guide on how to reset your OS X El Capitan Mac’s PRAM and SMC. Ignore the first part about booting into Safe Mode, as Apple disabled Repairing Disk Permissions in Mac OS X El Capitan, and just skip directly into resetting your OS X El Capitan Mac’s PRAM and SMC.
At least for a momentary while, this should wipe your OS X El Capitan Mac caches clean and hopefully let Bluetooth audio work without a stuttering or lag problem, meaning no more choppy or skipping music.
