The iOS 7.1 GM released just moments ago on Monday, March 10, 2014. With the iOS 7 GM releasing, jailbreak users are beginning to wonder, will the evad3rs release a 7.1 update to evasi0n?
The iOS 7 evasi0n jailbreak for iPhone, iPad and iPod came to the jailbreak community as a total surprise. Most had expected we'd be in for a long winter's wait; however, the jailbreak arrived 3 days prior to Christmas on December 22, 2013. Though quite a lot of controversy and insider drama surrounded the manner in which the evasi0n 7 jailbreak was released, still, a couple weeks after the fact, everything seemed to calm down, and themes and jailbreak tweaks for devices ranging from the new 64-bit iPhone 5s and iPad Air, to older models like the iPhone 4 and iPad 2, began filling the update section of Cydia.
Although many bemoaned the fact the evad3rs released the iOS 7 jailbreak so early, fearing it would soon be patched with the release of iOS 7.1, surprisingly, this jailbreak has had a nearly 3 month shelf life, as opposed to the 6.1 evasi0n jailbreak released February 5, 2013 and patched 6 weeks later on March 19, 2013.
Still, many within the jailbreak community are wondering, now that the iOS 7.1 GM has released — which is known to have patches already of key jailbreak pieces — will the evad3rs create an iOS 7.1 update to evasi0n 7, or will they wait and focus energy on iOS 8?
When speaking to @pod2g on the matter, his answer was basically what I expected, but he added a little something to the mix that made me smile. Here is what he had to say.
"For iOS 7.1, I don't know ... there is a big chance the evad3rs won't focus on it as a team ... expect that for iOS 8 :)"
However, he went on to say,
"If one day, I find myself bored and can put enough time and energy into it, I have some ideas for how to make a 7.1 jailbreak ... depending on how it has been fixed and other external events."
So what does this mean? Well, basically, there's a massive chance there will be no update to iOS 7.1, but yet, there is hope. I'd wager to say this is slightly more positive than the probability of getting a 6.1.3 from the evad3rs was, as they pretty much told us to "forget about it," from day one. I've already teased him that this would be an epic way to kick off JailbreakCon 2014, scheduled April 12-13, 2014, which @pod2g is planning to attend. But, of course, I'm not laying any money on it — yet.
If you are already jailbroken at iOS 7 or below, stay put where you are. Don't update to iOS 7.1 or you are sure to lose your jailbreak and may be without until iOS 8.0 releases.
