I don't know about you folks but I'm not sure how much more excitement I can take on this road towards and iOS 6, or 6.1 untethered jailbreak for iPhone 5/4S. After barely more than a week of joining forces, the "iOS Security Team" as @pod2g has dubbed them, is burning up the twitter feed with updates and progress reports that are indeed serving to excite and revive the jailbreak scene once more. Though we may still have a bit longer to wait, the train has definitely left the station and the destination is coming into view.
So what's the latest news on the jailbreak for iOS 6? Here's the low down.
Planetbeing, Pod2G and Pimskeks Tweet Progress
On Friday evening @planetbeing sent out a tweet to let us know he and @pod2g had been quite busy working on the liberation of the iPhone 5 from the chains of Apple's security.
"Made some nice progress today with @pod2g. I think I'll try to reward myself with a nap." Tweeted @planetbeing.
On Saturday morning @pod2g added this piece to @planetbeing's vague update.
"Oh yeah! 2 new vulnerabilities in a day, chance was with us. But we still miss that initial code execution for a public jb."
Another day passed and @planetbeing was found hovering within Reddit which he says he's "horribly addicted to," sharing even more about what was yet missing to finish the iOS 6 or 6.1 jailbreak.
"Pod2g discovered a vulnerability and told me about it and I tried to integrate it into my existing jailbreak code to replace one of the ones we don't want to burn. I discovered I couldn't get his to work due to some miscommunication, but in the process of trying to get his to work, I discovered a new vulnerability for doing the same thing. I did get THAT one to work and it's now integrated with the rest. Unfortunately, as pod2g says, neither bug has to do with initial code injection, which we currently don't have duplicate/backup vulnerability for at all."
The same day, @pimskeks seemed to come alive again, as after months of silence, many of us wondered if he would play a part in the upcoming iOS 6 or 6.1 untethered jailbreak for iPhone 5, 4S and other non-jailbroken devices.
Letting his fans know he was indeed back, this is what @pimskeks tweeted Monday afternoon.
"Dear followers I'm not dead. I'm still doing security research and jailbreaking. I just needed time for my family!"
Moments later he added to that statement.
"But no time to rest, time to get something done!"
And indeed it is time. After four cold and quiet months of jailbreak winter, iOS 6 jailbreak hopefuls have been longing to see the warm days of summer return.
On Monday afternoon more signs emerged that springtime might be near as @pod2g posted this hopeful tweet.
"Hey @planetbeing, please look at your IRC, I think I have good news!"
Of course we all just about fell to pieces at this point, as David Wang, being the joking hacker that he is, teased us further.
"Why is everyone getting so excited about the jailbreak? Afaik, best news I got today was http://postalservicemusic.net/ is coming back. ;)"
Haha ... Sure buddy, sure ... now what about that message from pod2g???
David Wang aka Planetbeing Tweets, "The Furture is Looking Bright For Jailbreaking"
Well, it took him over a day to fill us in, but finally, Tuesday evening @planetbeing gave us the update we'd been holding our breath to hear -- the one that definitively says "No the days of jailbreaking are not over".
Here is what he tweeted.
"Tons of progress the last few days. I think the future is looking bright for jailbreaking."
To which @pimskeks quickly replied.
Early Wednesday morning Cyril aka @pod2g logged onto Twitter oozing with excitement and tweeting his two cents:
I'm not sure about you guys, but if that doesn't look like a pretty good sign iOS 6 or 6.1 untethered jailbreak for iPhone 5/4S is on its way, well I don't know what is. We know @Planetbeing and others have been holding out for 6.1 hopeful that it will hold the bugs necessary to complete the initial execution code. This is impressive. Apple has done a lot to close up holes the devs have used in past jailbreaks. My guess is, with @pod2g so urgently hoping for the release of 6.1, he's found something, and he's banking on the fact that it will be present in 6.1 as well.
Pod2g Talks About HITB 2013:Steffan Esser to Chimes In
Of course another good sign that the iOS 6 or 6.1 untethered jailbreak for iPhone 5/4S devices is on its way would be the fact that Stefan Esser was found tweeting heavily this morning some fairly insidious posts. This is pretty good proof he knows the jailbreak is coming and he ain't happy about it.
On Wednesday morning, after tweeting about the progress made on the jailbreak for iOS 6, @pod2g was also found taking a moment to let folks know about the upcoming HITB conference in Amsterdam this year. Last year the iPhone Dream Team were truly stars there as they talked about the jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1. This year the new iOS Security Team, as @Pod2g has labeled them, will be present which is sure to make it epic once more.
At this point Esser decided to chime in, inserting his venomous tweets of cynicism to those who follow his stream.
"What a strategy: tell everybody that jb future is looking great and few hours later ask for sponsors to send you to an infosec conference ... Actually it is a repeating pattern. At some point hope is raised in people by comments/ pictures/ videos and then donations are asked for ... but you know it is all good, because we are not doing it for the money ..."
After reading these hate-filled posts, one brave follower of the Devs @eriksmets, decided to challenge Esser on his claims:
"What does it matter to you if money is or isn't a motivation for a jailbreak developer?"
To which Esser spit back this response:
"It matters when ppl claim everywhere that they are freedom fighters doing it only for freedom and collecting money all the time."
@eriksmets then followed up with a zing of his own.
"Well, even IF they were doing it for money, which I don't believe, I don't see the harm in that"
At this point @pod2g felt inclined to provide an answer for those who might be reading the interactions taking place:
"That could look like it, but it is not the case. It is just that #HITB2013AMS is now 3 months away. I always promote this event ... Anyway, I don't even know why I am answering to this."
And indeed he does, as it is one of the premiere hacking events of the year, featuring trainings, presentations, and panel discussions on all the hot topics in Information Security.
It appears though, Esser didn't get quite as much of a rise as he hoped for, since a few moments later he felt inclined to continue his negative commentary with this post:
"LOL. The expected sh**storm has started. How dare I question your gods ... I fully expected a sh**storm. You are not to question the GODS. Look at @nitoTV he is now misquoting me to start anti@i0n1c vibe."
I don't know about you but whatever @nitoTV may have posted I doubt it did any worse for Esser's reputation than the tweets flying off of his own page.
At this point @pod2g once again stepped in, hoping to stop the all-around bad vibe that was trying to infiltrate. Responding to @nitoTV's insults for Esser, @pod2g tweeted:
"Hey friend, don't react, that same scenario happens each jailbreak release. It's like a tradition ... in fact, I don't even know why we follow @i0n1c and friends ... I gonna fix this now."
So there you have it, progress is being made at nearly a breakneck pace, and though we may still have a few miles yet to go before we see the iOS 6 or 6.1 untethered jailbreak for iPhone 5/4S emerge, it is safe to say the leftover wait it quite bearable indeed.
Why I Love Writing About the iOS 6 Untethered Jailbreak Journey
It's funny. I had a reader, @dthardcore, make a comment on Twitter to me about how excited I must be to see this saga coming to a close, and though I'm definitely happy to know we will all get what we are hoping for soon, a part of me feels the journey was half the fun. @MuscleNerd told me something several months back when so much negativity was surrounding the jailbreak for iOS 6 that stuck with me.
"At the end of the day, it's the people and relationships that matter most"
And in this case I would say that is definitely true.
As much as I've enjoyed following the devs, as excited as I was to gain their attention along the way, the other thing I have been eternally grateful for is all the wonderful people I have discovered. People who have faithfully followed and read my articles, even back when I was completely clueless and following a faker team, "Team Dr1zzle", thinking they would be the ones to bring us a jailbreak.
Many of you have watched my writing grow and change and because of countless angels along the way I've been able to improve my grasp of the scene. A few of these angels I have to mention are @tbaybu, @Dolardallas, @jjl101411, @sloppycarlson, @Danolox @Hogermite and @j1m0nz. All these folks who have been eyes and ears for me, leading me to the right posts and information and even offering some constructive criticism along the way. Add to this the countless wonderful individuals who follow me now and send out compliments on posts I share ... well it's all quite overwhelming.
It's a very hard thing as a writer to put yourself on the line this way as truly with every article I write I invest the best of what I have. With this investment though is a fear at times that it won't be well received and as we know, rejection is hard. I just want to thank you all for the ways you continue to support what I do as your friendship and loyalty have meant the world to me.
Stay tuned dear friends, the iOS 6 untethered jailbreak journey is nearly through ...
