Forbes recently released its "Most Overpaid Actors in Hollywood 2012" list. Comedian Eddie Murphy tops the list. According to therighest.org, Murphy's net worth is an estimated $80 million as of June 2012.
Forbes uses data from their Celebrity 100 list, Box Office grosses and budget estimates from Box Office Mojo to determine this list. The magazine further looked at the actors' last three films released in the last three years in more than 2,000 theatres and calculated the return on the investment the studios spent on the actors.
The finance-oriented magazine further reported that for a movie to be profitable, it has to "earn twice its production budget in ticket sales and the millions spent on marketing."
Murphy, whose performances in "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Dr. Dolittle" helped these movies be a hit at the box office, has had no hits in a considerable period of time. His career has been downhill lately with his movies "Imagine That" and "Meet Dave" bombing at the box office.
"Tower Heist," which released last year as a come-back film for the comedian, failed at the box office, earning only $153 million on an estimated budget of $75 million.
For every $1 Murphy was paid, the studios got a return of only $2.30.
In the second place was a new entry to the list: Katherine Heigl. The "Grey's Anatomy" actress, whose movies gain a return of $3.40 for every dollar spent on her, gave amazing performances in hits like "27 Dresses" and "The Ugly Truth" at the beginning of her Hollywood career, but off late, her movies have not been able to recover even the budget.
Her latest release, "One For The Money," which was made on a budget of $40 million earned only $37 million at the box office.
"Legally Blonde" actress Reese Witherspoon comes in third on the list, with an average return of $3.90 for every dollar spent on her. She is one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood, but her latest movie choices have not been very smart ones.
Surprisingly, Sandra Bullock makes an entry into the list at number four with a $5 return for every dollar she was paid. Her 2009 release, "The Blind Side," was one of the highest earning movies that year, but her other two movies in the last three years, "All About Steve" and "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," were duds at the box office.
Concluding the top five is "Kung Fu Panda" Jack Black. The comedian's movies returned only $5.20 for every dollar he earned. "The Big Year" was barely noticed at the box office last year, earning a measly $7 million.
