Scheduled to premiere on Aug. 7, 2015, the “Goosebumps” movie looks to combine all of the scares from the bestselling 62 book horror series. The main character is Zach, a new kid in town who accidentally unleashes the evil beings imprisoned inside R.L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” books. Zach joins forces with R.L. Stine himself, played by Jack Black, to re-imprison the supernatural creatures menacing the town. And while the trailer has yet to find its way into theaters, it has been seen by attendees of San Diego Comic-Con and many members of the press. So what books are referenced and what monsters will we see come alive on the screen next summer?
The Monsters of the "Goosebumps" Movie
Slappy the Dummy
This is one of the big ones. Slappy is one of R.L. Stine’s most enduring characters and it looks like he’s likely to be one of the main villains in the “Goosebumps” movie. Featured in nine different “Goosebump” books, the trailer has already provided a look at Slappy come to life.
Giant Praying Mantis
While they may not be as scary as the giant praying mantises of Grasshopper Jungle, the mantises of “A Shocker on Shock Street” are a definite, with one scene in the trailer featuring the giant monsters menacing a car driven by R.L. Stine (Jack Black).
Yep, the lawn gnomes from “Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes” will be making an appearance. In the trailer they’re knife-wielding maniacs, so look forward to nightmares set in idyllic gardens.
The trailer for “Goosebumps” definitely features a werewolf of some variety. Whether it’s “The Werewolf of Fever Swamp,” Or someone wearing the werewolf skin of “Werewolf Skin” remains to be seen. I’m going to go ahead and guess the former.
The Haunted Mask
While it wasn’t shown in the “Goosebumps” movie trailer, the mask from “The Haunted Mask,” maybe one of the most frightening of the early “Goosebumps” books, will definitely make an appearance. Hopefully we’ll get to see R.L. Stine in its thrall, both because he deserves it, and because I love me some Jack Black slapstick.
Yep, there will definitely be a mummy in “Goosebumps” the movie. And while this picture doesn’t look like the traditional paper-wrappings variety, I suspect we’ll see both, especially since the “Goosebumps” movie will be loaded down with hordes of the undead. Surely there’s room for some mummy zombies too?
The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena
A warm weather Yeti facing off against Jack Black playing R.L. Stine and two kids? Why not! The more the merrier. I’d love for this one to be a man-in-a-suit, rather than a CGI ape. That way Jack Black can claim to have faced off against both real and virtual incarnations of King Kong.
Since the premise of the “Goosebumps” movie is that every monster from every book has been unleashed, I suspect we’ve only scratched the surface of what we’ll see in the final “Goosebumps” film. The IMDB credits has listings for numerous ghouls, a scarecrow, "The High Lord Executioner," Professor Shock, Madame Doom, Snake Lady, Bog Monster, and four vampires. You’ll have a chance to check out the above monsters for yourself soon, when the trailer for “Goosebumps,” starring Jack Black as R.L. Stine, sees wider distribution.
