The Exploding Kittens Kickstarter is not yet over but it has already become the most backed campaign ever in Kickstarter’s history in terms of numbers of backers. The Exploding Kittens Kickstarter now was 118,630 backers and counting and there are still three weeks left to go. The playing card game has raised $4.7 million, while its goal was $10,000.

Exploding Kittens is a card game created by video game designers Elan Lee (Xbox, ARGs) and Shane Small (Xbox, Marvel) and illustrated by The Oatmeal’s Matthew Inman. The Oatmeal fans will instantly recognize Inman’s signature drawing style and humor and the popularity of his website surely played a part in this Kickstarter’s crazy success. But Kickstarter users also love games and getting into them early, as per Cards Against Humanity, which Exploding Kittens is working with to make sure their backers will get their cards on time.

With Exploding Kittens, there are 56 standard playing card size cards in the deck. The object of the game is to not pick up an Exploding Kitten card or have a Defuse card handy if you do. There are also other various cards that you can use to skip your turn, peek at the deck and other things to give you an edge.

One Exploding Kittens deck can support two to four players, while combining two decks together can support up to 8 players. The Exploding Kittens deck of cards is suitable for kids who don’t mind the idea of cats accidentally blowing themselves up but there’s also a NSFW version that’s more horrifying and not kid-friendly. The NSFW desk started as a stretch goal of 100,000 backers, which was reached within a week.

In fact, the Exploding Kittens Kickstarter was 100% funded in just 20 minutes and 1000% funded in less than an hour, which is probably some sort of record too but no one seems to be keeping track of it since goals varies. In any case, the Exploding Kittens Kickstarter has dethroned the previously most backed Kickstarter, which was the campaign to bring back Reading Rainbow, which saw 105,857 backers, per KickSpy. There are still 21 days left in the Exploding Kittens Kickstarter campaign, so it’s lead will likely grow greater but it has a long way to go before it approaches the highest earning Kickstarter.

That distinction belongs to the Coolest Cooler, which raised $13.3 million. But Exploding Kittens has cracked the top 10, it’s currently in 7th place, behind the Reading Rainbow, which raised $5.4 million. To get your hands on an Exploding Kittens deck scheduled to ship worldwide in July 2015, you can pledge $20 on Kickstarter. The regular Exploding Kittens deck plus the NSFW deck can be had for $35 on Kickstarter. The cards will likely go on sale elsewhere later in the year, but now is your chance to be among the first to receive the game.
