What Does the Latest Java Update Fix?

The June 18, 2013 Java update 25 brings fixes for 40 different vulnerabilities which if used maliciously could cause users to become infected with virus and other malware.

Oracle release updates to the Java software each month and this month most of the patches affect client deployments of Java. However, there are 4 fixes which affect both client and server deployments. In addition there is one Java fix related to the Java installer while another fixes the Javadoc tool used to create HTML document files.

The vulnerabilities addressed in the June Java Update 7u25 ranked at the maximum level of severity on a vulnerability severity scale used by Oracle. If exploited, the holes could be exploited by and used to take control of computers via malicious Java applets. A Java applet is a Java Web applications which users can be fooled into downloading or running on their Mac or Windows PC thereby allowing the malicious content to begin its work.

Java 7, Update 25 Brings Two-Method Certification Revocation Checking By Default

2013 has been a year earmarked by malicious attacks and Java software has been no exception. Back in January a 0-day exploit was beings maliciously used on a large scale "in the wild". The security issue was so serious the Department of Homeland security issued a warning for all Java users to disable the software until a fix became available. Java was quick to patch those holes, offering an update within days of the report.

In an effort to fight Java exploits, Oracle changed Java's default settings so that the execution of unsigned applets without user consent or interaction could not take place. Oracle also encouraged developers to digitally sign their Java Web applications with valid certificates for further security.

In the June update 25 for Java, security was heightened even more through two-method certificate revocation checking which has now been made a default setting, The two method check now uses certificate revocation lists (CRLs) and Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) to check for certificate revocations by default.

Oracle's Eric Maurice Urges Users To Download And Install New Java Update

Oracle's Java version 7 update 25 is available now for download and install and as the fix targets many vulnerabilities that can be remotely exploitable by cybercriminals, in a recent blog post, Eric Maurice, director of security assurance at Oracle urged users to update to the latest version.

"Oracle recommends that this Critical Patch Update be applied as soon as possible because it includes fixes for a number of severe vulnerabilities," Maurice wrote.
