The Disney Channel announced that a pair of lesbian mothers will be a part of the final season of the popular kids show "Good Luck Charlie." The timing of the announcement, the day before SCOTUS struck down the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act, appears to be coincidental. But the Disney Channel's landmark decision is being met with equal amounts of enthusiasm for bringing the issue of homosexual adoption to the forefront by placing two lesbian mothers into the plotline of one of its hit shows.
"This is such wonderful news! We're so proud Disney is acknowledging that families don't have to fit into the cookie-cutter mold!" exclaimed Perez Hilton.
Charlie, who is a young girl, will befriend a child, and her parents will attempt to strike up a relationship with the child's two mommies, reports Lifesitenews.
The only issue that may stall the budding buddyhood is that Charlie's heterosexual parents are boring. Charlie (who is a young girl) will have her mother, Amy, speak with one "mother," while her father Bob plays the prototypical role of "bumbling sitcom dad," boring the other lesbian partner.
"Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness," said a Disney Channel spokesperson. "This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors."
Even one of the Disney Channel's biggest stars weighed in on the decision.
"Is this this true?!?!?!" Miley Cyrus said on her Twitter page. "I commend Disney for making this step into the light of this generation. They control ... so much of what kids think! Life isn't bright sets & wardrobe & kids becoming superstars! This is INSPIRING."
The responses from other people on Twitter towards the Disney channel have been mixed.
