If you've been holding out hope for a Diablo 3 release on Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, your patience might just be rewarded after all.

Nearly six months after its May 2012 release, Diablo 3 remains one of the most popular PC/Mac titles released this year, and it looks like console owners might finally get another chance to experience the wildly popular series too. While some may have begun to doubt that Diablo 3 would ever make the jump to consoles, given rumors that the next-generation could launch as early as next year, a new lifeline has been given to those hoping for a Diablo 3 release on Xbox 360 and/or Playstation 3.

During a recent interview, Blizzard's chief creative officer Rob Pardo confirmed that the Diablo 3 devs aren't just considering their options; they're already working on the console port while the decision makers determine if an Xbox 360 and/or PS3 release makes fiscal sense.

"We've got builds up and running on it," Pardo told Polygon. "We're not quite ready to release stuff about it, but it's looking pretty cool."

While the company has always been open about the potential for Diablo 3 to see a console release, this is the first time that anyone from Blizzard confirmed that the team actually has a build of the game running on one or more consoles.

Pardo didn't say which console(s) the devs have a version of Diablo 3 running on; however, there is always the possibility that Blizzard already has its hands on a next-gen dev kit or two. It's certainly nothing more than speculation, but I don't think anyone would deny that Diablo 3 would make a big splash as a launch title for the rumored Xbox 720 or Playstation 4.

The Diablo 3 dev team continues to work on new content for the game as well, and comments from Diablo 3 lead designer Jay Wilson seem to confirm that the dev team is hoping to see the first Diablo 3 expansion debut during 2013.

The first word of a Diablo 3 expansion came last month, from the mouth of Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime no less, but the company wasn't ready to offer a timeline for the Diablo 3 expansion's release at that time. While the design team obviously doesn't have much final say in the release date, it does seem likely that Blizzard would be in a hurry to get new content out for Diablo 3 sooner rather than later.
