Although Ubisoft has remained tight-lipped on the matter of Assassin's Creed III's single-player campaign, new information has been revealed regarding the plot and planned content updates for the game's multiplayer component.
Gaming website CVG is reporting that Assassin's Creed III's multiplayer mode will feature its own storyline, parallel to the single-player campaign of protagonist Desmond Bishop, and players will receive monthly content updates that advance the long-running series' lore.
According to Ubisoft Annecy, the team behind Assassin's Creed III's multiplayer mode, the new storyline will revolve largely around Abstergo's decision to commercialize the Animus. Each month, as players continue to gain experience, they will be rewarded with access to new videos and missions that help explain Abstergo's sudden decision to go public with the Animus technology. The game also places an added focus on the environment, giving players the ability to dispatch foes with new environmental kills, and a dynamic weather system to make things more challenging when the skies turn grey. Snowstorms and heavy rain will drastically decrease visibility, making it more difficult for players to see one another, and would-be assassin's can brutally finish off enemies with nearby items like glass bottles and axes.
The team also revealed details about AC3's previously announced "Wolfpack" and "Domination" multiplayer modes. Domination is a four-on-four team game that sees players attempt to capture and defend as much territory on the map as possible, while preventing the opposing team from doing the same. Wolfpack will ask teams of two-to-four players to hunt down targets as quickly as possible, but with a little extra effort required to earn an assassination. "Some are cowards and will try to run away when they spot you, others are fighters and will stun you and run away," says game director Damien Keiken. The team has programmed a wide variety of AI reactions to the presence of assassins, and says that more difficult targets will even use perk items like smoke bombs to aid in their escape.
Assassin's Creed III is scheduled for release on October 30, 2012 for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii U, and PC.
