Samsung Galaxy S5 Release Date, Specs Confirmed: February 24 Unpacked 5 Event Will Launch Next-Gen Flagship During Mobile World Congress 2014 In Barcelona [REPORT]
Samsung Galaxy S5 Specs Also Confirmed By Insider Leak, Shows 2K Display And Snapdragon 805 CPU
The Samsung Galaxy S5 release date and specs have been confirmed, the next-gen flagship will launch on Febuary 24, during the Samsung Unpacked 5 event which has been scheduled just shortly before the start of the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona. The Samsung Galaxy S5 has been long rumored to be launching in February and Samsung finally confirmed it by sending out invitations for the Samsung Unpacked 5 event 2014 Episode 1. SamMobile suggests that the "Samsung Unpacked 5" event name and the Samsung Galaxy S5 connection is a fairly strong hint. For comparison the Samsung Unpacked Ready 4 saw the release of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Some commentators have pointed out that the design of the invite itself resembles that new paper print UX and magazine features that we've seen in screenshots.
With the Samsung Galaxy S5 release date and specs confirmed, the Samsung Unpacked 5 event is scheduled for Monday, February 24, 2014 in Barcelona at 8pm CET, 11am PST. The Samsung Unpacked 5 event which will feature the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be livestreamed through the Samsung Mobile Youtube (HERE). The Samsung Galaxy S5 release date confirmation matches up with many earlier rumors which suspected that Samsung was going to launch its next-gen flagship in time for MWC 2014. HTC is simialrily expected to launch the HTC One 2 "M8" and LG is slowly leaking details about the LG G Pro 2, the flagship phablet successor to the LG Optimus G Pro. MWC 2014 should see the launch of several new smartphones and tablets with a focus on wearable technology. Companies like Lenovo will also receive more prominent coverage this time around following their purchase of Motorola.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 release date being confirmed also coincides with fresh information about specs of the next-gen flagship. Interestingly the Samsung Galaxy S5 specs insider information was leaked in a PDF together with iPhone 6 specs. The leak comes from the Korean securities firm, KDB Daewoo Securities which is considered to be fairly reliable. The Samsung Galaxy S5 specs that the PDF suggests confirm rumors we have heard earlier. According to the latest news the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be a 5.2-inch to 5.25-inch 2560 x 1440 SAMOLED display with 560ppi. It will include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 or Samsung Exynos 6 processor depending on the model, likely based on LTE capabilities and which international variant it is. The Samsung Galaxy S5 will have 3GB of RAM and internal storage options of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. It will have a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 3.2-megapixel front facing camera with Android 4.4 KitKat as the OS. According to the picture in the PDF it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S5 also has an all-metal body and the Samsung Display has an AMOLED Diamond Pixel Matrix.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 release date and specs being confirmed for the Samsung Unpacked 5 event also included some fresh rumors about the battery of the next-gen flagship. These specs rumors came from Eldar Murtazin who confirmed the aforementioned specs from Daewoo Securities and added that the Samsung Galaxy S5 would boast a 3,200mAh battery. That makes sense given the 2K display and beefed up cameras, both of which will require more power. SamMobile points out that the 3.2-megpixel front facing camera is a respectable bump and it makes the Samsung Galaxy S5 resemble Chinese flagships which often have 5-megapixel front facing cameras. Aside from Android 4.4 KitKat the Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to have its usual mill of Samsung apps like S-Health, Watch On, a new interface and fingerprint sense. Samsung is also expected to announce multiple variants of the Samsung Galaxy S5, including the premium high end all-metal body one we've seen leaked here, a cheap plastic body with a faux leather stitched back, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. We've also seen confirmation that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will have both a Zoom and Active variant.
