The Call of Duty Ghosts release date on Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U is November 5, 2013.

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Call of Duty: Ghosts extinction mode. Last week, I reported on the theory that zombies were out and aliens were in based on a teaser posted to the COD Instagram page as well as some trophy clues dug up by fans. It turns out that speculation was accurate as the recently released Call of Duty: Ghosts extinction gameplay trailer shows us that this year's horde mode will literally be out of this world. Call of Duty: Ghosts Extinction Gameplay Trailer

This Call of Duty: Ghosts extinction mode trailer provides some intriguing looks at the all-new foe facing fans in this year's horde mode. As a Halo fan, my mind immediately thinks of the Prometheans added to Halo 4. There are some similarities between the crawling "scorpions" in Call of Duty: Ghosts extinction mode and Halo 4's "crawlers." The four-legged glowing mouth look is the same, as is the wall-clinging zig-zag movement patterns. I'm not saying that Infinity Ward stole the idea, but I think it speaks to a growing trend in the FPS genre that has companies moving away from bipedal enemies like soldiers and zombies and trying to mix it up with a different enemy type.

There is nothing conventional about the footage in Call of Duty: Ghosts extinction gameplay trailer. In fact, it looks more like something found in XCOM than in the COD franchise, and that's a good thing. When you're tasked with creating an annualized AAA billion-dollar game you need to focus on variety. And what I've seen of Call of Duty: Ghosts extinction mode has me excited to go head-to-head with an enemy type that is unpredictable.

After all, we only get a glimpse of what's coming our way in the new Call of Duty: Ghosts extinction gameplay trailer. Only the "scorpions" are featured but my guess is there will be a few enemy types in extinction mode. If the goal for Infinity Ward was to create an experience different than Treyarch's wildly popular zombie mode then IW needs more than one enemy type. I'm hoping for the lineup we usually see in alien-based shooters. We got the low-level grunt soldiers in the scorpions, but hopefully they give way to elite warrior classes and juggernauts and maybe, just maybe, spaceships we can fight our way onto and then, naturally, blow up.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is scheduled for release on November 5 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. It will be available on both the PS4 and Xbox One as launch titles.
