How Often Do You Check Your Phone? Locket App Data Shows Users Unlock Smartphone 110 Times Per Day
New data from Locket, an Android app that pays users in exchange for placing ads on their lock screens, has found that users unlock their smartphones an average of 110 times per day. Locket compiled this data from its 150,000-plus users and found its highest frequency users are unlocking their phone screens many time more, BuzzFeed reported. Locket has even seen users unlock their phones up to 900 times in a single day.
During peak hours between 5-8 p.m. ET, when over 75 percent of Locket users are actively swiping, the average user checks his or her phone nine times an hour. Even during low frequency hours 3-5 a.m. ET, when 24 percent of Lockets users are actively swiping, the average user checks his or her phone four times an hour. BuzzFeed noted that 110 checks a day spread over 12 hours is one glimpse every six or seven minutes.
The 110 number may seem high or low to you depending on how often you check your phone. Locket's data may be skewed high since the app pays users to swipe across ads on their lock screens. However, another report has found that people check their phones 150 times a day.
But what if you want to find out how often you check your phone? While Locket pays you every time you unlock your phone, it doesn't show you the number of times you unlock your phone. The app is based on an algorithm that is able to tell if you are swiping multiple times to try and game the system.
If you actually want to count the number of times you unlock your phone, there's another Android app, Phone Addict Free that monitors your daily phone usage. The free app displays your average usage based on your historical data and shows the overall maximum usage in any given day based on your past data. If you're trying to cut back on your smartphone usage, this app allows you to track your progress by notifying you about your previous day's phone activity.
If you're really serious about cutting back on your constant phone checking, then turn it into a game. Phone Addict for iPhone is a game to see how long you can go without checking your phone. You collect points by unlocking challenges, such as the 30-minute challenge, 1-hour challenge, 4-hour challenge, and so on.
It's kind of ironic to turn to a smartphone app to beat your smartphone addiction. But that's just the world we live in now.
