'Sherlock' Trailer: 'Sherlock' Season 3 Teaser Revealed; 'Sherlock' Premiere Set For Early 2014? [VIDEO]
A new "Sherlock" trailer has been revealed - it's directly below this paragraph - and it's looking pretty good. The "Sherlock" season 3 teaser doesn't have as much footage as we would like - although in one sense it has more - but anything is better than nothing, right? The "Sherlock" Season 3 premiere date isn't officially set yet, but insider leaks are pointing toward early January for BBC and who knows how much later for PBS. Here's the trailer:
You may have noticed something odd about this "Sherlock" teaser. Which is that it's not just for the "Sherlock" season 3 premiere. That's right: it's a blend of a trailer for "Sherlock" series 3 and "Ripper Street" series two. Like a combination Taco Bell & Pizza Hut, the two have to share space - and only one of them is good (that's "Sherlock" and Taco Bell, obviously).
"Ripper Street," like "Sherlock," is about a famous 19th century British figure, in its case Jack the Ripper. Unlike "Sherlock," "Ripper Street" isn't a modernization - it's set in 1889, just after the murders ended. It's supposed to be good, but it doesn't have Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in it, so it can't be that good (not that that always works out even for them).
There's a good deal more of "Ripper Street" than there is of "Sherlock" in this ostensibly "Sherlock" season 3 teaser, but we do get a little bit of our favorite Burberry coatdetective. Just in case you missed it at Comic-Con, Sherlock's self-imposed fake death is over, and he's back on his inevitable journey towards becoming a psychopath or at leaset a high-functioning sociopath. In most of the fleeting glances we get, the dear old chap is looking stoically out over London.
We do get a little bit of dialogue in the "Sherlock" season 3 trailer. Holmes says to Watson, "The thrill of the chase, the blood pumping through your veins - just the two of us against the rest of the world." That's it, but it's a little - it's enough. I know my Holmesiana, and I think it's safe to say that's both an explanation for why Sherlock decided to return from the dead - in the canon, it's more than a year later - and also a good explanation of what Sherlock was doing in that year (solving mysteries, but without Watson).
So what stories are being covered in "Sherlock" season 3? The "Sherlock" teaser is little help in that regard, but Moffat is a bit more forthcoming. The three teaser words for this year's three storylines are Rat, Wedding, and Bow. According to Christianity Today, the three episodes will be called "The Empty Hearse," "The Sign of Three," and "His Last Vow." But who knows - the production team has admitted that they set up entire fake shots and scenes just to throw the more loony "Sherlock" fans off the trail. Guess we'll just have to wait and find out.
