Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls DLC Confirmed By Blizzard During Gamescom Press Conference
[UPDATE 8/26 1:20pm EST] Blizzard has confirmed that the team working on Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls is only focused on development of the PC version of the new expansion at this time; however, the studio is already teasing a Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls console release too. Head over to VG24/7 for more.
More than a year after Diablo 3 debuted to a mixture of fanfare and criticism last summer, it seems Blizzard is finally ready to discuss their Diablo 3 DLC plans, with the studio opting to formally reveal the upcoming Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls DLC during their gamescom 2013 press conference on Wednesday.
Of course, Blizzard all but confirmed the upcoming Diablo 3 DLC themselves, just days before the company was set to reveal the Reaper of Souls add-on to those fortunate in Cologne. Without explanation, a new subsection was added to the Diablo 3 page on Battle.net last week, featuring an unmarked doorway and a single quote from the soon-to-be-released Diablo 3: Book of Tyrael.
Finally, after a few weeks of teasers, Blizzard executives took the stage for their company's gamescom 2013 press conference on Tuesday, and revealed the first official content from the Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls DLC to a packed house of journalists and reporters attending the annual video game convention in Cologne. The studio also brought a playable demo of the new Diablo 3 DLC to gamescom, which will be available to anyone attending the show and willing to wait in a line that is undoubtedly wrapped around Blizzard's gamescom booth.
So, what's changing in Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls?
According to Blizzard, the new Diablo 3 DLC will increase the game's level cap from 60 to 70, add a fifth Act to the Diablo 3 campaign, introduce new game modes, and an all-new Crusader class that wields a combination of battle magic and heavy armor to battle Diablo's minions. New enemies and loot show up in the Diablo 3 DLC too, theoretically guaranteeing dozens of hours of additional game play; however, I suspect no amount of additional content would prevent the most diehard Diablo 3 players from trying to see all the new game additions within 24 hours of the Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls release date.
Unfortunately, Blizzard didn't offer an exact release date for the Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls DLC, or any sort of guidance on when Diablo 3 players could expect to get their hands on the first batch of Diablo 3 DLC. Given that only a few months remain in 2013, the lack of comment on a proper Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls release date has us thinking that Blizzard doesn't plan to release the Diablo 3 DLC any earlier than 2014.
It's also unclear if/when console players can expect to get their hands on the first round of Diablo 3 DLC, though it's certainly not outside the realm of possibility that Blizzard could be planning to include Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls with the purchase of a console version of the base game.
[UPDATE 8/23 9:10am EST] We've added video of Blizzard's entire Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls presentation to the bottom of the article, alongside the Diablo 3 DLC teaser trailer which debuted at gamescom earlier this week.
