'Game Of Thrones' Season 3 DVD Release Date: Blu-Ray & DVD Dates Confirmed; Four Limited Edition Box Sets Revealed
"Game of Thrones" season 3 DVD release date and limited edition news! We finally have an official release date for the DVD and Blu-Ray of the most important season of television in ten years: February 18, 2014, right about when we thought it would be, and not too long before the expected "Game of Thrones" season 4 premiere in March or April. And the box art looks insanely cool across the four (!) limited editions we know about so far.
The official "Game of Thrones" season 3 DVD release date was announced by HBO, and set for February 18, 2014 for the United States and February 24, 2014 for those poor saps who are themselves ruled by an autocratic monarch (that's the UK, to be clear). The announcement, which slipped under the radar with all the crazy "Game of Thrones" Comic-Con news (like XXX not being dead and Winds of Winter coming out in 2014), came along with a contest: show fans could vote on the special edition art for the Best Buy edition.
The "Game of Thrones" season 3 DVD & Blu-Ray release date will thusly actually lead to the début of several different formats. In response to the poll, which has now ended, Best Buy in particular is releasing not one but three exclusive special editions of the box set, each of which features the sigil of one of the Great Houses. The particular three they're using were chosen by fans, and unsurprisingly enough are House Stark, House Targaryen, and House Lannister. No House Baratheon love? I guess I can dream on and wait for next season so we get the stag in a heart rimmed with flames (that's Stannis's new sigil). All three box sets look stunning and retail for $60, so if you haven't picked a favorite House yet, now's the time (unless you're as rich as Tywin Lannister).
Amazon has a special edition "Game of Thrones" season 3 DVD & Blu-Ray set as well, and while I personally like it less, I'm probably the only one. It's basically a dragon statue that happens to also be the "Game of Thrones" season 3 Blu-Ray. The dragon is in 3D and made out of an unspecified "durable heavy weight material," and it looks pretty impressive. And this is only an artist's rendering; the official art will be released on September 1, 2013 (and will presumably also be an artist's rendering... or at least an industrial designer's). Also, it costs $105, which is five dollars more than the nicest edition of Saint's Row IV, which isn't the most important anything of anything. So hey, call it a deal.
Of course, the "Game of Thrones" season 3 Blu-Ray release date is all well and good, but it's got nothing on the real question: the "Game of Thrones" season 4 premiere. Luckily, we know it will be in spring, and since HBO loves to release its DVDs just a week or three before a season starts, we can now comfortably date the fourth season for March 2014. Which feels very, very far away right now.
