‘Game of Thrones’ Season 4 Casting: Indira Varma HBO ‘Rome’ Star Cast As Ellaria Sand, Mace Tyrell By Roger Ashton-Griffths [SPOILERS]
Casting For Styr, Magnar Of Thenn And Mark Gatiss Still Unknown For "Game Of Thrones" Season 4
"Game of Thrones" season 4 casting confirmed two more actors for key roles in season 4. The first was Indira Varma, former star of HBO's "Rome" where she played Niobe, the wife of legionary Lucius Vorenus. Ellaria Sand is the paramour for Oberynn Martell, the Red Viper of Dorne who was cast as the Chilean actor of Pedro Pascal. Varma, who is an Indian-Swiss/Italian by ethnicity, shows that HBO is attempting to fill the Dornish roles first according to George R. R. Martin's more "exotic" Middle Eastern feel he has given Dorne. When we speculated about the roles that "Sherlock' actor and writer, Mark Gatiss could fill we pointed out that Dornish roles seemed to be going to actors with a duskier complexion.
"Game of Thrones" season 4 casting is drawing heavily from past HBO talent. Varma has also has roles on UK drama's like "Hidden Target" and "Silk and Hunted." Varma will be an excellent addition to the "Game of Thrones" cast for season 4. Actors from HBO's well regarded series like "Rome," "The Wire" and "Deadwood" are always welcome to add their talents.
Joining Varma is another British actor, Roger Ashton-Griffths was confirmed for Mace Tyrell, Margarey and Loras's father and son of the formidable Queen of Thornes, Olenna Tyrell. Roger Ashton-Griffths was confirmed by George R.R. Martin himself on "Not A Blog." Like Varma, Ashton-Griffth has a well-established career and has played roles on "A Knight's Tale" which had Mark Addy, actor for King Robert Baratheon and "The Tudor" which had Natalie Dormer who plays Margarey Tyrell.
The "Game of Thrones" season 4 casting of Ashton-Griffth confirms our previous suspicion that Mark Gatiss would be cast for a more interesting character than Mace Tyrell. No offense of Ashton-Griffth, but Mace Tyrell is a bit of an empty suit in the book and doesn't warrant all the secrecy around which role Gatiss is playing. We know that one of the characters that need to be cast this season is Styr, Magnar of Thenn. Mark Gatiss could be playing that but we saw leaked audition video for the role by Dutch actor Yorick van Wageningen.
We are starting to lean toward our past prediction that Gatiss will play a character like the High Septon or Kindly Man, both more mysterious roles that would give away too much if HBO announced. Another similar, but more distant possibility is the Three-Eyed Crow. With the most obvious choice like Mace Tyrell and Kevan Lannister already cast, the only other possibilities are Doran Martell and one of the Greyjoys, (Vicatrion, Euron and Aeron).
"Game of Thrones" showrunner David Benioff offered some spoilers for season 4, "We got more action, which is obviously more time consuming. It's a brutal shooting season ahead. But if we can make it through, yeah, I think it's going to surpass season three. The last three episodes, there's so many scenes we've been waiting for so long to do. And it just gets more and more fun to write for these characters. After three years of doing it, we have that much more comfort to make everything uncomfortable for them. We're very excited for it."
Hopefully as we get closer to the "Game of Thrones" season 4 release date we will get a better idea of what to expect in terms of casting. We're only waiting on Styr, Magnar of Thenn, whoever is Gatiss is playing and the rest of the Dornish characters like Arianna Martell and the Sand Snakes.
Kit Harrington even said that "Game of Thrones" season 4 is his "favorite so far". Harrington said, "I've just finished reading [the Season 4 scripts] and I genuinely think it's my favorite one so far. And that sounds like I'm pulling your leg. I'm not. I'm not doing the actor thing of saying 'each season is brilliant' because I have to. I think it's a really powerful season. It's very action-filled. Last season was a big impact season, this season is very action-packed. On paper it looks incredible, whether we can pull it off, who ... knows!" "Game of Thrones" season 4 release date is expected at some time in 2014. Right now filming is happening in Iceland.
What do you think of the new "Game of Thrones" season 4 casting with Indira Varma as Ellaria Sand and Roger Ashton-Griffth as Mace Tyrell?
