Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Specs: Exynos 5 Octa, Snapdragon Processors Both In Next Gen Android Phablet, But How? [REPORT]
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 To Feature Two Different Versions, One With Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Processor, Another With Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5420 Octa Processor
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs have leaked along with an image of an alleged prototype Samsung Galaxy Note 3. You can see the leaked Samsung Galaxy Note 3 prototype image leak from "TechKiddy" HERE. Accompaniying the leaked Samsung Galaxy Note 3 prototype image, we also have a specs leaks which indicates that the Samsung Exynos Evolution chipset that was recently announced will debut in the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date is expected to be September 4, at the same time during "Samsung Unpacked" close to IFA Berlin.
At the same time, we also have reliable information that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 processor would be a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. How do these seemingly contradictory leaks make sense? Most likely we will have at least two, if not more, versions of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 that have different specs. Samsung will attempt to hit multiple price points with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, just as they did for the Samsung Galaxy S4. We can expect, at minimum, two versions of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, one with the Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor and another with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.
Samsung has issued a press release about their new Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor, revealing expected specs and performance capabilities. The processor is based on the ARM. LITTLE quad-core. The new Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor will have four Cortex A15 cores clocked at 1.8GHz and four Cortex A7 cores at 1.3GHz. This is expected to constitution a 20% increase in CPU processor power for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 compared to devices using the older chip. The processing power of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be quite powerful, easily one of the strongest devices available when it's released.
The Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor is said to be advantageous when it comes to pictures, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will have a 13-MP camera that has optical image stabilization. There is an alleged picture taken by the device HERE, but it looks fairly bad and blurry so take it with a grain of salt. This feature results in maximizing the usage hours of mobile devices with a high-resolution display such as WQXGA (2500×1600), in particular when browsing the web or doing multimedia application requiring the frequent screen refresh.
Some users may recall that the previous version of the Samsung Exynos processor had a bug which caused major problems. Samsung hasn't made clear if the bug has been fixed but AndroidandMe reports that, "the bug that plagued the previous version of this processor has presumably been fixed, as it simply wouldn't be logical for Samsung to release another processor with the same bug." We would hope so. Samsung has been criticized for the slowness of its driver updates and lack of developer support with the Exynos processors.
In terms of other Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs, we think a 5.99-inch full HD display is most likely, but we have also heard rumors that there will be numerous Samsung Galaxy Note 3 variants released to hit different price points. One variant will have a Super AMOLED display and another with a Super LCD display. There is also the possibility of different build materials, with more expensive versions featuring all-metal aluminum bodies while the cheaper ones will be made of plastic.
UK CNET reports rather different specs, a 5.7-inch HD screen with 3GB of RAM. They also point out that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs are likely to be different not just for variants at a different price point, but different based on region. The Samsung eight-core Exynos 5420 chip is expected to be fairly rare while the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chip is expected to be more common. This would explain the seemingly contradictory Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs information that has leaked, "The Note III will also reportedly include a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor from Qualcomm, LTE, 802.11ac W-Fi and a 5.99-inch 1080p display running Android 4.2.2/4.3." quoting inside sources at Sam Mobile as claiming the Note III will be "the most powerful in the world with an octa-core processor, eight-core GPU, 3GB of RAM, 5.99-inch Full HD display and a 13MP rear camera."
It is likely that those of us in the United States will get the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, which is quickly establishing itself as the dominant chip for flagship devices. International markets are likely to get the Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor. US consumers should not find that distressing. In a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 vs. Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5420 battle, the Exynos 5 Octa 5420 likely wins out in terms of sheer processing power. However, it is worth noting that the Qualcomm Snapdragon is fairly remarkable when it comes to power management. Developers claim that Samsung offers poor support for the Exynos drivers and that the Qualcomm Snapdragon is easier to develop ROM's for.
Clearly there are going to be multiple Samsung Galaxy Note 3 variants. It will be interesting to see how the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will compete against other rival phablets including the Sony Xperia Z Ultra and the HTC One Max. Both will have screen sizes that are as large, if not larger than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and come with powerful specs like, "A 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 chip is expected to lie at the heart of the One Max, allied to 2GB of RAM, up to 64GB of storage, and a 3200mAh battery," in the case of the HTC One Max. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra, "will reportedly boast a 6.44 inch display with a 1080P resolution, 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage space and an 8 megapixel camera for taking photos making it a solid competitor to not only the Galaxy Note 2 but the rumored Samsung Galaxy Note 3 that is rumored for later this year."
Essentially, we will have three devices coming out around roughly the same time, Q3 of 2013, all boasting remarkably similar specs (though the Xperia Z Ultra screen size is by far the largest). HTC and Sony are not likely to release multiple variants as Samsung is prone to do. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will ultimately end up being differentiated on the basis of screen and design as well as processor.
