The Nexus 7 2 Release Date Price has been confirmed as $299 with a release date set for July 31, 2013. This would make the Nexus 7 2 $100 more expensive than the Nexus 7. This is clearly a major price jump for the Nexus line which prides itself on delivering solid quality with stock Android for an affordable price.

The question most consumers should ask, what am I getting for $100 extra? Earlier an Asus customer service rep had leaked the Nexus 7 2 specs:

·      7 inch LED with 1890 x 1200 resolution

·      Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 Quad Core CPU

·      2GB RAM

·      32GB internal storage

·      5MP rear camera and 1.2MP front-facing camera

·      Android 4.3

·      4000mAh battery

·      Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC enabled

·      LTE/WCDMA/GSM support

As you can see it would be a marked improvement over the Nexus 7 specs which boast an Nvidia Tegra 3 Quad-Core processor with 1GB Ram and 16GB or 32GB of internal storage. The Nexus 7 screen is a 7-inch 1280 x800 216 ppi HD screen which has a 1.2MP front facing camera and no rear camera, something that drew a lot of criticism back during Nexus 7 release. The Nexus 7 runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and it was not LTE enabled.

In our view the $100 price increase is warranted by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor, the better 2GB Ram, more internal storage, the existence of the rear camera, LTE enabling and of course the updated Android 4.3 Key Lime Pie (though the Nexus 7 is sure to get the update as well). The Nexus 7 2 is a real next-gen upgrade of the Nexus 7. The only place where it could be considered inferior to the Nexus 7 might be with battery life. The 4,000mAh battery of the Nexus 7 2 is less than the 4,325mAh battery of the Nexus 7. It's a fairly minor issue and the specs of the Nexus 7 2 are leaked so we may still not have exact numbers.

IBTimes raises the question of whether customers wouldn't prefer the iPad Mini 2, which is only $30 more at $330. We doubt it, as customers of the Google Nexus line of products are unlikely to jump ship to iOS 7 Apple products from Android. It is also worth pointing out that the Nexus 7 2 probably beats the iPad Mini 2 when it comes to specs. For instance, the Full HD screen on the Nexus 7 2 is better than the iPad Mini 2's Retina display. Once we have a better idea of the specs of both devices we will do a side-by-side comparisons to establish whether you should buy the Nexus 7 2 or iPad Mini 2.

As IBTimes rightly points out, the Nexus 7 2 is coming a good deal sooner than the iPad Mini 2 which gives it a decent advantage. It's possible that in addition to the 4G LTE the price jump could also be accounted by an option for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. That would be value for money and make the choice much easier.
