Pokémon X And Y News: Five New Pokémon; Xerneas And Yveltal Types Confirmed; New Gym Leaders, Professor, And Team Flare Revealed

Pokémon X and Y news, and Pokémon news in general, is always biggest around one time of month: when the Japanese manga CoroCoro comes out. Guess what, that just happened, and there is a huge spill of new information about X and Y. We know Xerneas's type (called it). We know Yveltal's type (called it, but obvious). We know a bunch of new evolutions and new Pokémon -- five in all -- and the professor and the bad guy team and a new Gym leader and -- my goodness, this is probably more Pokémon X and Y news than we got at E3! And, if you're behind, check our complete list of all the new Pokémon.

First up in Pokémon news, for the first time ever, is not the new Pokémon (because there are so many). It's the types for the legendary version mascots. It's confirmed: Xerneas is pure Fairy. Yveltal is Dark/Flying. That means they won't be weak against each other, as I half expected. And if you're a Fairy hater, by the way, Xerneas is the epitome of what Fairy type should be: a mythical stag, not a Tinkerbell. Thankfully, most of the Fairy types are in fact leaning in this direction. We also learned each mascot's ability: Fairy Aura and Dark Aura, respectively, which power up moves of that type. Each legendary also has a unique move, which Serebii translates as Geo Control for Xerneas and Death Wing for Yveltal. No word on their English names yet.

Okay, onto the other big Pokémon X & Y news, the new Pokémon -- including the first version exclusives. All of these are Japanese names and will be different for the English release. First up, Pancham has an evolution called Goronda, who gains the Dark subtype and has the ability Iron Fist. And it still chews on a leaf, but it looks way cooler than stupid Pancham:

A new Pokémon evolution pair was also revealed, and they feature a unique typing: Dark/Psychic. They look like squids, but, thank heavens, they aren't Water types, because we certainly have more than enough of those already. Maika is the Rotation Pokémon, and it evolves into Karamanero, the Reversal Pokémon. Both can have either the Ability Suction Cups or Contrary.

I'm going to go ahead and say Karamenero does indeed look like the Dark / Psychic Pokémon it is. (Image: Bulbapedia / CoroCoro / The Pokémon Company)

And we got even more Pokémon than that: the Pokémon X & Y news continued with two new Fairy Pokémon, and unlike Xerneas they are neither majestic nor non-Tinkerbellian. They are both, in fact, pretty lame. Here they are, the Perfume Pokémon Shushupu and the Cotton Candy Pokémon Peroppafu (as dumb as the Vanillite series).

Let's go through the rest of the CoroCoro Pokémon X & Y news in a rush: the new enemy team is Team Flare, and they are motivated by money. They wear red suits, like certain other criminal groups motivated by money. The Pokémon Professor this time around is Professor Platane, and at some point you'll battle him (!). Two new Gym Leaders are Zakuro and Citron; we don't know yet what types they represent.

CoroCoro also revealed that Peroppafu and Clauncher are exclusive to Pokémon X, and Shushup and Skrelp are exclusive to Pokémon Y. Pokémon Y wins that round, but... Xerneas.

The PSS (Player Search System) in Pokémon X and Y has gotten some more details too: it includes new "heartpounding" Miracle Trades, although what exactly is heartpounding about them is as of yet unknown. The Global Trade Station allows for searchable trades; Happy Sign gives small in-game bonuses based on how players say they feel; the Holocaster promotes events and tournaments and other news. If you're a big battler or trader, you'll see a lot of the PSS, I'm sure.

In other Pokémon news, the Pokémon National Championships are over. The World Championships start on August 10, 2013 in Vancouver. Also, the Pokédex iOS app will be available for free from July 13 until an undisclosed date. Get it while you can, even though it only comes with the Unova section.
