Kanye West 'Yeezus' Release Date: Album Debuts On Billboard 200 Chart With J. Cole, Mac Miller
Kanye West's "Yeezus" album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 327,000 copies in its first week. West's "Yeezus" album sales are the third-largest sales week of the year, beat out only by Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" with 968,000 and Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" at 339,000.
This accomplishment is bittersweet for Kanye West, as "Yeezus" is his sixth number one album and sixth straight chart-topper, but also his lowest sales debut yet. Kanye West's former lowest sales debut was "The College Dropout" with 441,000, Billboard reports.
Along with Kanye West's "Yeezus" album release on June 18 were two additional Hip Hop albums. J. Cole's "Born Sinner" and Mac Miller's "Watching Movies With the Sound Off" albums also debuted on the same date and landed on the Billboard charts closely behind Kanye West's "Yeezus", in second and third place respectively.
Did the hip hop artists meet industry sales expectations? Yes and no. Kanye West's "Yeezus" falls short of album sales predictions, which were speculated at 500,000, Billboard reports. J. Cole's album "Born Sinner", on the other hand, greatly exceeded album sale forecasts, selling approximately 100,000 copies more, with a total of 297,000 albums sold in its first week.
Kanye West, though, refused to market his "Yeezus" album, instead using guerrilla advertising tactics and exclusive listening parties leading up to the "Yeezus" album release date. Yeezy fans were left in the dark on the latest album, as Kanye West held off "Yeezus" leaks for as long as possible.
Will "Yeezus" fare well in the upcoming weeks? USA Today reports that debuts with large sales figures, such as Kanye West's "Yeezus", have a steep second-week decline of 60 percent to 70 percent. Only time will tell. Track Kanye West's "Yeezus" album on the Billboard Charts to see how the album is doing in real time.
