A new Disney and Sony could be providing movie-goers in South Korea with a way to legally watch new films online, in hopes of combating piracy. According to The Vergevia the Wall Street Journal, Disney and Sony are the first U.S. movie studios to allow the simultaneous release of movies in theaters and online. With the system currently in a trial period, the first movies available online will be "Brave," "Django Unchained" and "Wreck-It Ralph." If the program is a success, it could be possible that Disney and Sony will bring simultaneous movie viewing to other markets.

There are many theories as to why ticket sales have declined across the film industry in recent years. Some might say the decline has to do with the prevalence of home theater set ups and piracy of HD content. With this kind of system set in place, users can watch the latest Disney and Sony movies from the comfort of their own homes (and not have to pay thousands of dollars for snacks and a drink).

Having a movie released online and in theaters would be a drastic shift from the way we currently consume new movies. Old media are usually abrasive to change -- we saw many of the same changes recently in the television business. While at first many networks were against putting their shows, services like Hulu and Netflix, as well as channels uploading episodes of their show themselves, have changed how we view in the last five years. Disney and Sony allowing their movies online while still in theatres could be the beginning of a trend to please consumers and reduce piracy.
