The iPad 5 is the presumed upcoming addition to Apple's top-selling tablet line. Although Apple hasn't confirmed its intent to release the fifth-generation of its popular tablet, there are plenty of reasons to expect that the iPad 5 release date is imminent. Likewise, the iPad Mini 2 is the presumed successor to Apple's iPad mini, though the Cupertino Company has yet to officially announce the iPad Mini 2 release date.

Rumors for both the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 have run rampant in recent months. The release of Apple's fourth generation iPad last November came as a surprise to many, coming in the same calendar year as the iPad 3, which was released in March 2012. The iPad 4 was released at the same time as the first-gen iPad Mini, which has a 7.9-inch display compared with the 9.7-inch display of the full-sized iPad.

1) iPad 5, Mini 2 Release Date:

The iPad 5 release date is also expected to coincide with the iPad Mini 2 release date. Most reports are pegging an iPad 5 release date for October 2013. DigiTimes reported that mass production of the iPad 5 will begin in July or August of this year, allowing the device to be on shelves by October 2013. Similarly, CNET reported that large scale production of the iPad Mini 2 will begin this month or July ahead of the iPad Mini 2 release date this fall.

2) iPad 5 Features:

Shortly after the launch of the iPad 4, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Apple would release a thinner, lighter tablet. For the iPad 4, Apple included a new A6X processor system-on-a-chip, which the company claims makes the latest iPad twice as fast as its predecessor. The iPad 4 also received the same, new lightning connector of the iPhone 5 and better LTE support. But that was the extent of the new features for the fourth-gen tablet, which was the same weight and thickness of all previous iPads. According, a dramatic reduction in weight and thickness is expected for the iPad 5 release date.

One way to make the iPad 5 lighter and thinner is to use "GF DITO" touchscreen technology, or GF 2, which is already being used in the iPad mini, per AppleInsider. GF 2 helped make the iPad Mini 23 percent thinner and 53 percent lighter than the original iPad. Apple was the first company to commercialize and mass produce GF Ditto Technology, which could be used in the iPad 5.

Another way to make the iPad lighter and thinner is to use IGZO displays that use up to 90 percent less power than previous iPad displays, meaning a smaller battery could be used to reduce overall weight and thickness, per Tactus.

Tactus also leaked the rear shell of an iPad, which lent credence to the lighter and thinner iPad 5 rumor.

The New York Times' Gadgetwise blog reported that Gumdrop, a company that makes Apple cases, has already released a new case for the iPad 5. Gumdrop has posted a 360-degree view that compares the new and old iPads inside its cases. It shows the new iPad to be thinner and narrower. Gadgetwise noted that the Apple case maker previously released and iPhone 5 case before the smartphone was release. Gumdrop cases, like Apple product, are made in Shenzhen, China, per Gadgetwise. And manufacturers there are known to swap information as a strategy to attract companies to use Shenzhen manufacturers. So it's possible that Gumdrop already knows what size the new iPad will be.

3) iPad Mini 2 Features:

The most discussed rumor for the iPad Mini 2 is that the next-gen iPad mini will be getting Retina display. "We should see the start of mass production of the panels in June or July," Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch told CNET. The Retina iPad Mini will boast one of the highest tablet resolutions to date, with a resolution of 2,048x1, 536, Shim said. That gives the upcoming device roughly the same PPI (pixels per inch) as the Retina screen on the iPhone 5 and one of the highest densities for any tablet.

There is also a conflicting rumor that Apple's second-generation 7.9-inch tablet will feature the same display as the previous iPad Mini with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, Techno Buffalo noted. The only changes to the iPad Mini 2 according to Techno Buffalo is that it will have a slightly thinner design, an upgrade to the A6 processor and iOS 7. This minor upgrade is expected to be unveiled in the fall with third-generation iPad Mini with Retina display to arrive in early 2014.

4) iPad 5, Mini 2 Price:

When Apple introduces a new product, it's usually prices the same as its predecessor.

The current iPad 4 is $499 for the Wi-Fi only 16GB version and up to $929 for the WiFi and cellular 128 GB version.

The current iPad Mini is $329 for the Wi-Fi only 16GB version and up to $659 for the Wi-Fi and cellular 64GB version.
