Need For Speed Rivals Release Date, Xbox One And PS4 Plans Confirmed By Electronic Arts
Two days after Electronic Arts executive vice president Andrew Wilson took the stage at Microsoft's Xbox One unveiling, to reveal some of the new games EA would bring to the next-generation console, one of the largest game publishers on the planet has revealed the next entry in the Need for Speed franchise: Need for Speed Rivals.
Not only did EA confirm development of Need for Speed Rivals, the publisher actually confirmed the Need for Speed Rivals release date would come to current-gen and PC on November 19. Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of Need for Speed Rivals are coming before the end of 2013 as well, though EA apparently isn't ready to reveal the next-gen Need for Speed Rivals release date(s) just yet.
An early version of Electronic Arts' Need for Speed Rivals press release suggested the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 builds of Need for Speed Rivals would be coming this November as well, though the company has since released an updated press release that simply says the next-gen Need for Speed Rivals release date is coming "later this year." The amended Need for Speed Rivals press release also confirms a PC version of the game is coming on Nov. 19, after the initial version featured no mention of a Need for Speed Rivals PC port.
Unfortunately, there's no word yet on whether the current- or next-gen version of the game will be making the jump to PC, though executive producer Marcus Nilsson told Joystiq that "Need for Speed Rivals will look easily as good on PC as next-generation consoles."
That's a pretty sharp about-face, considering Electronic Arts CTO Rajat Teneja recently said that the next-generation of gaming hardware is "a generation ahead of the highest end PC on the market," just yesterday in a new post on LinkedIn. If both statements are true, it certainly begs the question, should we be impressed with the Need for Speed Rivals PC team, or just disappointed in the folks responsible for the Xbox One and/or PlayStation 4 builds of the game?
In terms of gameplay, Electronic Arts says Need for Speed Rivals will be an open-world experience, with players deciding whether they'd like to be a street racer or an officer of the law. From there, Need for Speed Rivals will take players all over the fictional setting of Redview County, in a quest to either become the greatest racer/law enforcement official that Redview has ever seen. EA also confirmed that Need for Speed Rivals will be powered by the Frostbite 3 engine, ruling out any chances of a Need for Speed Rivals release date on the Wii U.
The Need for Speed Rivals release date is coming five platforms in total, with Need for Speed Rivals headed to PC and current-generation consoles on Nov. 19, and the game's next-gen builds coming sometime after the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 hit store shelves later this year.
Update: Electronic Arts has also revealed the first Need for Speed Rivals teaser trailer.
Are you looking forward to the Need for Speed Rivals release date? Getting tired of the Need for Speed franchise? Wish Electronic Arts was bringing more of their games to the Wii U?
