Wii U Virtual Console Game Release Schedule: Strong Capcom Support; When Will Nintendo Add GameCube Games?
Wii U Virtual Console is up and running, and the upcoming game list & schedule keeps getting longer. There aren't many games out just yet, but they're trickling out, with increasing support from other publishers. And what we have so far is very good stuff.
We've got the lowdown on the games that are on their way, plus, in case you missed it, the most recent releases.
First, let's do a quick run through of what's on Wii U Virtual Console right now. In North America, there are only ten games so far: Balloon Fight, Punch-Out!!, Kirby's Adventure, Donkey Kong Jr., Excitebike, Ice Climber, Mega Man, Pac-Man, F-Zero, and Super Mario World. Granted, the Virtual Console only formally came out about two weeks ago, but it's still a pretty light list.
No matter; more Wii U Virtual Console games are already on their way. This Thursday, May 9, Solomon's Key and Xevious will hit the VC, followed by the more exciting Super Metroid (at the excellent price of $.30) and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts the following week. Later in May and early June, we'll also get Ghosts 'n Goblins (how are these different? I missed out on these at the time), Yoshi, and Donkey Kong. The latter two will also be $.30 each.
While Nintendo is being pretty slow, Capcom is stepping up to fill the Wii U Virtual Console void. Street Fighter 2 (as well as Nintendo produced Link to the Past) are both on their way to the UK Virtual Console, and so presumably the U.S. version sometime soon as well. Capcom has promised a large number of 16-bit titles on their way to the system in the near future.
Nintendo may be dilly-dallying, but they too are releasing a good number of Wii U Virtual Console titles later this year (although they aren't being any more specific as to the date). The most notable, of course, is EarthBound, which was never released on Wii Virtual Console. Others include Kirby Super Star, Kirby's Dream Land 3, Super Mario Bros. 2, and the original pre-NES Mario Bros.
Don't forget, there may only be a handful of Wii U virtual console games right now, but they are good ones. Super Mario World launched Nintendo's greatest system (in my humble/nostalgic opinion) and holds up insanely well today; Nintendo Life gave it a 10/10 and I can't disagree. Kirby's Adventure and Mega Man are both very solid as well; the rest are a bit more short form and, in my very debatable opinion, don't hold up that well (that's right: I'm an Excitebike and Punch-Out!! hater).
What have you picked up on Wii U Virtual Console? What do you want to come out? Are you going to buy a Wii U just for EarthBound?
