The "Legend of Korra" season 2 release date may be closer than we thought. It's been a while since the last batch of rumors for the Avatar sequel Book 2 launch leaked, but earlier this month we got some very good news! Read on for more Korra season 2 release date news and spoilers.

The "Legend of Korra" season 2 release date could be right around the corner. How do we know? Turns out one of the "Avatar" sound engineers, Aran Tanchum, has a personal Tumblr, and it turns out that earlier this month he posted the following message online alongside a series of photos of him and his team hard at work.

"Music, sound effects and foley spotting session for a Legend of Korra Book 2 episode with Mike, Bryan, Ben and Jeremy," wrote Tanchum.

The "Legend of Korra" season 2 release date likely won't arrive by the end of this month (or even the next), but based on the info above we're pretty certain that the premiere can't be far away at this point. For the non-audiophile Avatar fans out there we'll explain what Tanchum was talking about. Music and sound effects should be pretty obvious. Foley is a recreated subtle sound effect, like the sound of bedsheets moving, shoes dragging or people eating. Audio engineers have an arsenal of special tricks for recreating these sounds with clever substitutions. A foley spotting session means the sound engineers are watching the new episodes and marking down which scenes they'll need to foley to recreate specific sounds.

So does the news mean the Legend of Korra season 2 release date is definitely in the near future? We turned to our friend and audio engineer Dan Krysa for his professional opinion. Here's what he had to say:

"Yeah [Legend of Korra season 2 is almost finished] especially if they're doing sound effects and foley. But that's a lot of work and sounds very ambiguous. All three of those things take teams of people and lots of time. I could confidently say that 100% of the time, foley is only cut when after the scene is edited."

The Legend of Korra season 2 release date definitely won't arrive in time for spring 2013, but based on the latest "Avatar" news we're still holding out hope that Book 2 could premiere over the summer. Even a late July or August premiere would be better than the November launch we've been dreading for months.

This latest Legend of Korra season 2 release date news comes from a Korra-obsessed blog called avatarthelegendofkorraonline.com, which clued us in on the Tumblr leak, so we'll offer up their take on the summer Vs. fall premiere debate as well:

The tricky thing about this circumstance is that if a final cut of each episode is being shown during these spotting sessions, Book 2 can't be that far away. If a rough cut is being shown, however, Book 2 may be some ways away as that would indicate that the animation is not finalized. As an example, the color corrections may have not been completed for each episode.

It's tough to tell where Book 2 stands in that aspect, but one thing we can confidently take out of this is that the sound effects and music are currently given a priority. That being said, it looks like Mike, Bryan and the rest of the team are working on the little things - the finite details of Book 2.

In the end, we stand at two possible air dates for Book 2: Summer and Fall. I won't go into too much detail right now, but I can definitely see a scenario where Book 2 airs in both of these seasons. Unfortunately, the scenario where Book 2 airs in the Fall seems more dominant in my mind.

Whenever the Legend of Korra season 2 release date does arrive, expect to meet a whole bunch of new characters, including Eska. We got our first look at the new female character when show co-creator Bryan Konietzko leaked a screenshot on his Tumblr. The image shows Eska talking to Bolin. Based on her outfit, we also have a feeling she may be from the Water Tribe, though we can't say if she's a bender or not.

Hypable has some good insight to add based on the leaked Legend of Korra season 2 release date spoilers:

The character, called "Eska", is one of Korra's two twin cousins, who hails from the Northern Water Tribe along with her brother Desna and their father Unalaq. Not much else is known about this branch of Korra's family, but Eska and Desna's dour expressions in concept art revealed at last year's San Diego Comic Con has led to their being dubbed "the creepy twins."

We can't help but wonder, based on the photo of Eska and Bolin apparently hitting it off, if the Legend of Korra season 2 release date will introduce a new love triangle into the animated show. Here's Hypable's Michal Schick with an argument that Eska may be moving in on Korra's turf:

Eska certainly doesn't look especially chipper in the new image, but we're currently positing sadness rather than creepiness. Bolin doesn't like his usual cheerful self either; could there be some kind of romantic tension between the two? Or are both Bolin and Eska mutually concerned about another problem facing the Korra Krew?

The Legend of Korra release date plot spoilers were also flowing at a recent Avatar panel organized at Momocon 2013 and featuring voice actor Steve Blum (who plays the main villain, Amon, in season 1), Sifu Kisu (a martial arts and eastern philosophy consultant who helped develop air bending) and Sifu Rodriguez (another consultant who developed Toph's earth bending fighting style for the original series).

Blogger Explosions of Geekiness was on the scene, so here's her full report with plenty of juicy Legend of Korra season 2 release date spoilers:

"Holy sh*t you guys...the Avatar/Korra panel at Momocon yesterday was so awesome. Steve Blum, Sifu Kisu, and Sifu Rodriguez (consultant for Toph) was there. Everyone had great questions (except for the one girl who just HAD to ask for autographs...), and we "learned" a few things coming up. (I put learn in quotations because it was hinted at and never really said.)

"Firstly, we're gonna be getting a sub-bending form of airbending! Kisu said it was going to blow our minds. MY MIND IS READY TO BE BLOWN. Also, he totally knows who Lin's daddy is, but he was tight-lipped, so we're gonna find out soon enough I'm sure. Then when someone asked about who they would cast in a Korra movie, Sifu refused to say anything and he said we'd see why later...I'm not sure how I'd feel about a Korra movie. Steve said he wouldn't want one done.

"Adriana aka tinysaurus was there! She gave Steve a CD of all the Disney songs she's modified to make Korra themed. She was literally tiny and cosplaying as Kiki from Kiki's Delivery Service. So cute!" [Emphasis added].

Hope you saved space for more Legend of Korra season 2 release date spoilers, because we've also got our hands on Avatar coverage from Emerald City Comic-Con. Here's blogger Sea-Dilemma's report:

Filmeditor16 with Grey Delisle at Emerald City Comic Con! Grey was funny and and very nice and really pretty (prettier than her photos!). She did Azula and Vicki from "Fairly Odd Parents" for us, and signed five things for us and took a picture and gave us all hugs! She has a fan for life in us! She gave us scoop on season 2 of TLOK. She said that she is doing three characters, and that one is the younger version of an established character who had a traumatic event happen to her, and we're thinking LIN! [Emphasis added].

That's all the Legend of Korra season 2 release date news and spoilers for now, but check back soon for the latest Avatar news.
