Before you watch the "American Idol" Season 12 Top Six results show live or online for free, here is a preview of Thursday's episode.
The final six contestants tackled two songs during Wednesday night's episode. The first round features tunes written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, many of which were written before the finalists were born. As TVGuide notes, this did not exactly do much to quell complaints of irrelevant and old-fashioned song choices.
However, some of the "American Idol" Season 12 finalists did stand out during this first round. Per Annie Barrett of EW.com, both Kree Harrison and Candice Glover had nearly flawless performances. Harrison took on "What The World Needs Now Is Love," starting the beginning of the piece a cappella. Glover, meanwhile, earned a standing ovation for "Don't Make Me Over," immediately making the judges feel guilty after all but Mariah Carey failed to include her in their top three during last week's results show. Keith Urban rectified this error following Glover's first performance.
Some critics, including Michael Slezak of TVLine, also enjoyed Amber Holcomb's take on "I Say A Little Prayer." Others, though, were less impressed. Bill King of BuddyTV, for instance, called the performance "karaoke." Still, the judges praised her, perhaps in an effort to keep her out of the Bottom Three this week.
Janelle Arthur and Angie Miller had solid, if not spectacular, performances during the first round of the "American Idol" Season 12 Top Six performance show. However, perhaps the real story of the early portion of the show was Lazaro Arbos' disastrous take on "(They Long To Be) Close to You."
Barrett of EW.com called it possibly one of the worst performances in the show's history. As Brian Mansfield of USA Today notes, the judges stopped being politically correct with the show's lone remaining male, ripping him for his poor choice of key and noting that he missed a key change midway through the song. However, the critiques were so over the top that they might encourage his fans to vote for him even more.
The second round was where several of the contestants really shined. Miller chose a lesser-known Christian ballad, but the judges praised her for returning to her comfort zone at the piano. Harrison also earned raves once again for her take on a Kris Kristofferson classic.
But once again, the night belonged to Glover. Her reimagining of "Lovesong" earned another standing ovation, plus several bows from Urban and Randy Jackson. The latter called the performance one of the best ever on "American Idol," while Carey even threw a handful of glitter on her.
She should likely be safe for another week, as should Harrison and probably Miller. Holcomb and Arthur, however, could each be in trouble, as they have been in the bottom three before. The judges do still have their one save of Season 12, and Thursday is the last day they can use it. The judges will likely rescue Holcomb from elimination after her slightly weak showing this week, as all four put her in their top three last week. But it's unclear if they would do the same for Arthur, who earned the worst reviews among the ladies during Wednesday's "American Idol" Season 12 Top Six performance show.
