Fallout 4 Release Date News; Inon Zur Hints At May 15 Announcement At PAX East And ThreeDog Tweets About A 2014 Release [UPDATED]
Now that May 15 is here, I've reached out to Zur and his PR team for comment on what this game could be. As soon as we hear back from them (if we hear back from them) I'll post the update here. Thanks for reading our Fallout 4 release date coverage!
Inon Zur's PR people got back to us, and the game he was talking about at PAX East (which they insist isn't Fallout 4) won't be announced today. When he's cleared to talk about the project we will (hopefully) get some more details.
Well it's August 13 and we FINALLY found out what this big mystery project is. Joystiq is reporting (and Zur's reps have confirmed) that he will be working on Fantasia: Music Evolved. Congratulations Mr. Zur on working on a project that IS NOT FALLOUT 4!!!
Ok Fallout 4 fans, our redemption may be coming soon. Despite the utter lack of official announcements from Bethesda, there have been a few teasers that have let us know that a new Fallout game is likely in the works. I'll do a quick recap of the current Fallout 4 release date news before going into the latest leak (and trust me, it's a doozy.)

So far, there have only been two credible sources of information relating to a yet-to-be-announced-but-probably-being-made-because-seriously-why-not Fallout 4 title. The first is series voice actor Erik Dellums, known in the Fallout 'verse as ThreeDog. ThreeDog has been tweeting little hints to fans that he's working on something big for Bethesda. The first tweet, sent out in January, really stoked the flames of the rumor bonfire.
#Fallout3 and #ThreeDog fans: There may be more of the Dog coming! Fingers crossed!
- Erik Todd Dellums (@ETDellums) January 8, 2013
This was apparerntly a major marketing no-no and ThreeDog had to go on the defensive, giving interviews saying he knew nothing about anything and was just expressing his hopes that a Fallout 4 game was in the works. A few weeks ago, he went on a tweeting spree talking about the original tweet and how it may have screwed up his relationship with Bethesda. Obviously, if there was nothing going on Bethesda probably wouldn't have put the fear in him. Oh, and he tweeted this out TODAY:
FALLOUT 4 will be THE BIGGEST GAME OF 2014!!! And Three Dog WILL BE BACK!!! #WishfulThinkingHopingAndPraying — Erik Todd Dellums (@ETDellums) April 1, 2013
So that's reliable source #1.
Reliable source #2 comes from Bethesda themselves, albeit in a roundabout kind of way. A job posting on Bethesda's site looking for "experienced programmers to work on cutting-edge technology for an unannounced game on future-generation consoles."
While it doesn't specifically say it's for the "Fallout" series, the ad lists "experience playing Bethesda Game Studios games a plus" in the requirements. The speculation is that the post refers to the Fallout series, as Bethesda Game Studios (as opposed to their sister company and Dishonored publisher Bethesda Softworks) has only published Elder Scrolls and Fallout titles in the last decade. So that's reliable source #2.
Now, I think, we have reliable source #3: Inon Zur.
For those of you who don't know, Inon Zur is the man behind the music for the Fallout series. He was part of a panel at the GDC conference and talked about working on a big upcoming project. A Redditor who goes by the handle thezest22 caught Zur's speech at PAX East and posted the following on Reddit.
Now this post is purely speculation, please keep that in mind. I was at an audio panel today at PAX East. Inon Zur(who has worked on Fallout 3 and New Vegas) kept teasing about an upcoming project. He said it would be announced on May 15th. Now it could be anything, especially the already official Dragon Age: Inquisition. Considering the place(Boston) and whose mouth it came from, i'd love to think that it's Fallout 4. I guess we'll see, eh?
Reddit being Reddit, there were some skeptics among the WOOO!-ing fans. But further digging by Redditor oSHAKESPEAREo discovered the the speculative leak by Zur actually holds a good deal of weight. Another gaming fan had spoken to Zur about his work and asked him if he was going to be a part of Dragon Age III: Inquisition. Zur said he wasn't going to be a part of that game. So, if the only "very big game" titles Zur has on his gaming resume are Fallout and Dragon Age, and he's admitted to NOT working on Dragon Age then, odds are, the May 15 announcement he's talking about is for Fallout 4.
Think about it. It's about a month before E3, giving Bethesda plenty of time to dish out some hype before making a big reveal in June. Now that the DLC for Dishonored is out, and Elder Scrolls Online is wrapping up production ahead of its predicted summer 2013 launch, what's next for Bethesda? I mean, we have next gen systems coming out and Bethesda hasn't confirmed any titles for them so far. Obviously, they have to release something. And the cycle for Bethesda Game Studios has been Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.
I would be very, VERY surprised if Bethesda didn't announce Fallout 4 for the next gen consoles within the next few months. The fact that the consoles themselves are being kept relatively quiet serves as a handy explanation of why we haven't heard anything official about Fallout 4.
I think it's safe to say the wait is almost over fellow Fallout fans. Hopefully this time next year we're trekking around the ruins of Boston using V.A.T.S. to liquefy bandits and mutants and tweeting about the killer next-gen graphics and enormous open-world.
Or we'll be chasing Fallout 4 2015 release date rumors.
