Less than a week after the "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update made its official debut, the "Minecraft" dev team is back with another incremental update, unveiling the "Minecraft" 1.5.1 pre-release patch on Tuesday afternoon.

Only six days after Mojang released the long-awaited "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update to the general public, the dev team is back with an incremental update to the sandbox PC title which has already managed to sell 9 million copies. Not content to kick back and relax after delivering an overhauled lighting engine and revamped redstone mechanics,  the team at Mojang is now focused on polishing the latest iteration of "Minecraft" to hit the PC.

For those who may not have known, or simply forgotten, last week's "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update was actually delivered many weeks later than originally promised; however, many were happy to wait a little extra time given Mojang's promise of eliminating every game-crashing or redstone-related bug which remained the in "Minecraft" 1.5 Redstone Update.

Now that those bugs have been fixed, the "Minecraft" team can presumably turn its attention to the various other issues which surfaced before/after the Redstone Update. The "Minecraft" 1.5.1 pre-release made available on Tuesday features a handful of performance optimizations, a falling items fix, a game crash-inducing bug which apparently slipped through the dragnet, and a few other relatively rare problems.

Mojang's Jens Bergensten has also updated the /r/minecraft contributions, providing new information on the "Minecraft" dev team's plans for upcoming updates and the future of the game. He also revealed that "Minecraft" 1.5.1 should be released on Thursday, assuming of course that nothing goes wrong in the interim.

Here's the "Minecraft" 1.5.1 pre-release change log, courtesy of Mojang:

  • Fixed a bunch of bugs
  • [MC-7174] - OSX: Crash on startup (OpenGL "Function is not supported")
  • [MC-8824] - FPS Drop due to Smooth Lighting
  • [MC-11654] - The text of things fall out of the picture
  • [MC-11839] - Invalid potion effects crash the game.
  • [MC-11894] - Crash with invalid wool values
  • Improved performance
  • Notable: Falling blocks no longer glitch one step
  • Notable: White stitching between blocks should be less frequent
  • Notable: Crash on Mac OS X on "OpenGL Function Not Supported"
  • Notable: Unable to place paintings
