A "Final Fantasy X" and "X-2" HD release date could be coming soon. New has leaked that a "Final Fantasy X-2" HD remake will come bundled with the previously announced "Final Fantasy X" HD remake for PS3 and PS VIta, which was originally announced at TGS 2011. (Photo: Square Enix)

[UPDATE: An official "Final Fantasy X" and "X-2" HD remaster website has been launched by Square Enix.]

A "Final Fantasy X-2" HD remake could be packaged with Sony's upcoming "Final Fantasy X" HD for PS3. If this isn't music to your ears, then you are probably a terrible person and don't deserve a "Final Fantasy X HD" remake anyway. Kidding aside, rumors have leaked that a "Final Fantasy X-2" HD remake is an actual possibility, which was first rumored on Japanese gaming web forums, and then confirmed by gaming website Gematsu, based on a Japanese magazine ad for the two upcoming remakes, a scan of which was leaked prior to the magazine's release next week.

A "Final Fantasy X-2" HD remake would not only be joyfully welcomed with open arms by Final Fantasy fans, but would also make sense, as VG247 notes, given a technicality of Sony Computer Entertainment of America practices: Sony does not release Blu-ray disc copies of single games, only bundles of two or more, hence why we have hard copies of The "God of War Collection HD", and "Ico & Shadow of the Colossus" HD, but not a hard copy of "Okami" HD. Just think: a dual "Final Fantasy X" HD and "Final Fantasy X-2" HD bundle would be a marvelous addition to one's collection of games. Here's hoping we'll hear more information soon. No North American release date has been confirmed for "X-2" HD.

Previous to the leaked rumors of a "Final Fantasy X-2" HD remake, Sony officially announced that a "Final Fantasy X" HD remake would be coming to PlayStation 3 and PS Vita during the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) in 2011, after which we have heard little more information about the planned ports. Given the hotly anticipated PS4, expected later this year, it is quite possible we will also see "Final Fantasy X" and "Final Fantasy X-2" on the PlayStation 4 this year or next. The last update we received on the "Final Fantasy X" HD was in February, over 18 months after its initial announcement. It was a flimsy video announcement from Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto, apologizing for the delays and showing off character models of the "Final Fantasy X" HD heroes playing on the PS Vita. While the updated HD graphics looked promising, this announcement was viewed by some as a bit insulting, given that after 18 months, all Square Enix had to show for the "X HD" remake was less that real, in-game footage. Perhaps, however, if Square Enix truly has been hard at work on remaking "Final Fantasy X-2" in HD as well, we can forgive them for taking their time. Not familiar with the plot of "Final Fantasy X-2?" It was noteworthy during its release as Square Enix's first direct sequel within its series of normally separate "Final Fantasy" worlds. In Gamespot's original review of "X-2" in 2003, the explained the plot of the first "Final Fantasy" sequel, describing the shifting sociopolitical landscape of Spira, the world in which the characters of the original "Final Fantasy X" live:

It's two years after the defeat of Sin, and the fabled Eternal Calm has come to Spira. Though the constant threat of attack is gone, this newfound peace is made uneasy by competition between rival factions, each vying to bring Spira's new era under its own control. Amid these circumstances, Yuna is still as thoughtful and introspective as ever, but she's traded in her robes and staff for short-shorts and a pair of pistols by joining the Gullwings, a trio of 'sphere hunters' that includes FFX alum Rikku and a tough, new fighter named Paine.

Both "Final Fantasy X" and "Final Fantasy X-2" are great games, unique and very different. Will you be pining for a copy of the "Final Fantasy X" and "X-2" HD remake bundle as we will?
