The "Spring Breakers" sex scene debate keeps going on Twitter, with hundreds of new tweets. Meanwhile, the media is having it's own debate over the NSFW movie starring Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, James Franco and rapper Gucci Mane. A recent article from the Boston Herald touches on the controversy.
"Selena Gomez peels off her Disney girl persona, and most of her clothes, in this week's R-rated 'Spring Breakers,'" writes Stephen Schaefer, "but considers the buzz over her hard-partying bikini-babe role a positive."
But does Selena Gomez "shed her image" for the "Spring Breakers" sex scenes? The Disney starlet disagrees.
"It's not trashing or shedding an image," said Selena Gomez of the "Spring Breakers" sex scenes. "I'm super passionate about what I do and to have the opportunity to work with Harmony Korine."
Before signing on to shoot the "Spring Breakers" sex scenes, Selena Gomez says the film's avant garde writer-director asked her if she was was "ready to leave your lifestyle a bit ad come on this journey."
"That's exciting and I didn't know what I was getting myself into but it was more liberating than frightening," Selena Gomez told ABC, reveling in the "Spring Breakers" sex scenes.
The New York Times' glowing review by Manola Dargis also touches on the controversial "Spring Breakers" sex scenes.
"The beer doesn't flow, it floods: over heads, writhing torsos and the bared breasts that wiggle like puppies and wag at the camera like the middle fingers that more and more revelers raise," writes Dargis of the opening scene to "Spring Breakers."
Later in the review, Dargis attempts to explain what drew the Disney Channel stars to agree to star in "Spring Breakers" despite the racy sex scenes:
Mr. Korine clearly digs frolicking with his visiting celebrities, and the actresses seem happy to do things that would make Uncle Walt spin in his grave. They're almost giddy, at least at first, and given that both Ms. Gomez and Ms. Hudgens have put in time working for Disney it's no wonder that they cut loose. In "Spring Breakers" they have the chance to simulate the behavior that feeds the tabloids without the humiliations and career-crushing price paid by the likes of Lindsay Lohan.
Makes sense, but does it excuse the R rated content of a film starring actresses best known for the PG resumes? What do you think of the "Spring Breakers" sex scenes? Too NSFW or just racy enough? Share your thoughts in the comments.
