President Satoru Iwata went into little detail regarding the Super Smash Bros. 4 release date during Nintendo Direct, but couldn't resist saying a few words about what is arguably the company's most popular franchise. He confirmed again that the game would be playable on both Wii U and the 3DS (a first for Nintendo). Iwata also explained that development of the game was a huge undertaking but promised that the Super Smash Bros. 4 release date remains on track.

Finally, Iwata promised that Nintendo would have something to show for all its work at E3 2013. Don't expect to see the actual Super Smash Bros. 4 release date, but if the company keeps its word we'll get our first peek at game screenshots this June 11-13.

Unfortunately that's all Iwata and Nintendo had to saw at today's Nintendo Direct concerning the Super Smash Bros. 4 release date, but read on for more new and rumors regarding everyone's favorite fighting game.

We couldn't believe it when we first heard the news, but it turns out that Nintendo actually delayed the Super Smash Bros. 4 release date on purpose! Yup, Nintendo game developer Masahiro Sakurai, who led the "Brawl" team was asked to put "Smash" on the back burner and focus on another project, "Kid Icarus: Uprising."

Video Games Blogger reports that Sakurai began mapping out the Super Smash Bros. 4 release date as soon "after finishing Brawl and once the 3DS released." But President Iwata was apparently scared that "push[ing] Sakurai into another Smash development cycle for fear of tiring him out on the series."

Here's even more info and analysis from the gaming blog site:

"Now that the game is almost finished, Iwata feels it is time for him to get back into development on Smash. But this time, they have the new Wii U home console to consider. The Smash Bros. creator wants to make an HD videogame, as we previously reported, so Sakurai must have been very excited to hear that the Wii U is an HD console.

"Given that Nintendo now has two new systems (Wii U and 3DS) Sakurai knew the only way to go was to develop the new Smash Bros. game for both systems, and make them cross-compatible. But he is not the type of developer who wants to simply add new characters and new levels and call it a day, he wants to truly do something new. Typical Nintendo eh."

Unfortunately we still don't have a specific Super Smash Bros. 4 release date, but when it finally arrives it won't be just be for Wii U. The new game will be available for the handheld 3DS as well.

The last Super Smash Bros. 4 release date question we have is what the game will be called. Will the new title follow the pattern set by "Melee" and "Brawl?" According to the latest rumors it may not. We're hearing that Nintendo may call the new game "Universe," according to a report from 1up. http://www.1up.com/news/next-super-smash-bros-game-called-universe But we can't help but suspect that this kind of boring name is really just a place holder for the real thing.

There's another rumor floating around that when the Super Smash Bros. 4 release date finally arrives the game will be called 3DS, at least for the 3DS version. Here's more info from the article on ZI:

"According to the rumor, Wii U's Super Smash Bros. will focus on modern characters while 'Super Smash Bros. Memories' will star retro characters including Donkey Kong Jr., Ridley, Pac-Man, Takamaru, Mach Rider, Dig-Dug, and Stanley the Bug Man. The source also claims that Nintendo 3DS's Super Smash Bros. title will be released holiday 2013."

We're not sure how we feel about this Super Smash Bros. 4 release date rumor though. After all, Nintendo has already confirmed that the new game will be "cross-compatible" across the two systems, suggesting that it will be the same game, not two different versions.

So will you buy a copy of Super Smash Bros. 4 when the release date arrives? Of course you will, but what do you think the new game will be called? And what new characters are you hoping to see? Share your thoughts in the comments.
