Disney Infinity Release Date, Price, Starter Characters Revealed By Avalanche Software
New details on the pricing and launch characters for the Disney Infinity platform were announced Tuesday, roughly 24 hours after Disney first announced their answer to Activision's Skylanders product line.
The company announced that three of its most recognizable modern franchises will kick off the new platform's launch when the Disney Infinity release date arrives later this year. Gamers will also have access to Captain Jack Sparrow, Pirates of the Caribbean; Sulley, Monsters Inc./Monsters University and Mr. Incredible,The Incredibles when the platform launches this summer.
In addition to the game's starter characters, screenshots from Disney Infinity seem to confirm the inclusion of Sulley's one-eyed partner Mike Wazowski, as well as the rest of the Incredible Family and the villain Syndrome. Disney has also confirmed Power Disc bundles featuring content from The Muppets, Dumbo and Tron. The Power Discs will act as booster packs for the Disney Infinity platform and grant access to new environments, in-game buffs, and/or new toys for the game's "Toy Box" mode.
The "Toy Box" mode will reportedly give gamers a surprising amount of freedom to mold the Disney Infinity platform to fit their own particular preferences, similar to the wildly popular LittleBigPlanet franchise available for Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, while mixing and matching characters and environments from a variety of Disney worlds.
For those who prefer a more structured gaming experience, the aforementioned Disney Infinity Play Sets will offer more traditional gaming experiences, with levels and story-lines exclusive to the included character(s) from each Play Set's designated franchise. While the Disney-created missions will be character-specific, the additional content will presumably be compatible with the game creation tools found in the Disney Infinity Toy Box mode.
Avalanche Software also expects to have 20 unique figurines ready for use by the time the Disney Infinity release date rolls around later this year and will continue to reveal new characters in the weeks leading up to the platform's launch. Screenshots and promotional materials suggest fan favorites from Toy Story, Cars and Wreck-It Ralph will make the final cut as well, but Disney has yet to confirm any additional characters at this time.
Many expect the Disney Infinity platform to be wildly successful, possibly even rivaling the $500 million Skylanders brand launched by Activision during late 2011. While Skylanders had only the semi-popular Spyro the Dragon to lend "star power" to the game, Disney has literally hundreds of established characters at its disposal for the Infinity platform.
Disney Infinity will be released for the Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC when the platform makes its debut this summer and is currently in-development for the Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita as well. Disney Infinity Starter Packs will retail for $74.99, with Play Sets going for $34.99 each and Power Disc bundles starting at $4.99. Individual characters will also be available for purchase at the cost of $12.99 each or $29.99 for a set of three.
