iPad 5 Release Date 2013: New iPad, iPad Mini 2 To Be Released In March? [REPORT]
According to analysts, the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 will be released in March 2013.
Brian White, of Topeka Capital Markets, said he spoke to industry sources at this week's CES 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada, who told him that both the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 would be released in March.
In October 2012, Apple introduced the iPad 4 and iPad Mini. While most industry experts predicted the iPad Mini's release, many were shocked that Apple would release an iPad 4, since the iPad 3 was only released in March 2012. The surprise release of the iPad 4 angered many consumers, who bought an iPad 3 thinking that it would be relevant for at least one year (previously, Apple refreshed their devices on a one year cycle). Now, it seems that we can expect to see 2 iPad refreshes in a calendar year.
White expects a new iPad 5 to be lighter and thinner than the iPad 4 that was released in 2012. The new model is also expected to have a brand new A6X processor, a chip that Apple has designed themselves, and Apple's now-customary Lightning port, which they introduced with the iPhone 5 and have continued with the iPad 4 and iPad Mini. The iPad Mini 2 will be generally similar to the first model that was released in October. But, it should have upgraded hardware, including a faster chip. Its unlikely that the iPad Mini 2 will feature an A6X chip, in an effort to keep costs of the iPad Mini 2 low. Also, a Retina-screen iPad Mini 2 wasn't discussed either, but that's unlikely as well. Instead, Apple might just increase the quality of the screen in the existing model of the iPad Mini, according to this report.
It's interesting that White says he spoke to sources at CES 2013, considering Apple didn't have a presence at the tech event of the year. Obviously, White didn't say who his contact were, but surely some Apple employees were present at CES 2013, so maybe he spoke to them.
