‘Amish Mafia’ Reality Show Fake? New Discovery Show Reveals Mennonite Thug Life [VIDEO]
The new "Amish Mafia" reality show in TLC is showcasing a side of life in the Amish community that no one has ever seen before. The "Amish Mafia" reality show reveals the life of Amish protectors who drive cars and blackmail clergymen. However, the premise of the "Amish Mafia" reality show is so outlandish, critics are questioning whether the "Amish Mafia" reality show is real or completely fake.
"When I first saw the trailer [for the show], I thought maybe it was a 'Saturday Night Live' skit on reality television because it was so farfetched," Donald Weaver-Zercher, a professor at Elizabethtown College and expert on the Amish said, according to the Inquisitr. "My sense is this Amish mafia is about as real as the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in The Office."
Mark A. Perigard of The Boston Herald also said the show appears to be staged.
"Judging from the premiere, most of the hour seems staged," he said. "So many faces are blurred out, those coming in late to the hour are going to think their TVs are on the fritz."
The "Amish Mafia" reality show follows around a group of Amish who dole out justice and enforce laws in Lancaster's Amish community, best known for the quaint, technology-free lifestyle that the Amish live.
But while TLC admits that the stories shown on the "Amish Mafia" reality show are reenactments, they network maintains that all of the stories are completely true, according to ABC News.
But while some critics question whether the "Amish Mafia" reality show is real, others are excited at the prospect of seeing the Mennonite thug life, and say the "Amish Mafia" reality show could be the next big thing.
"Reality television and the Amish are really a match made in TV heaven," media critic Michael Levine told ABC News. "It is a controversial concept and reality feeds on controversy. It's outrageous, it's mysterious and it's unexpected."
The show premieres Wednesday, December 12 at 9 p.m. EST.
