A newly revealed easter egg found in Far Cry 3, which reveals a connection between the popular shooter franchise and the Assassin's Creed series, is taking the web by storm.

Far Cry 3 won't be released in the United States for a few more days but, in a rare turn of events, European gamers actually got their hands on the game sooner than their North American counterparts. Throughout the day, interested gamers have been treated to a treasure trove of screenshots and new information about the game, with a few live streams popping up as well, and have begun to upload a variety of screenshots and plot information on Reddit and various other web sites. While much of the information coming out has been interesting, one particular easter egg seems to be many gamers' attention.

While playing through Far Cry 3 earlier today, Reddit user Scarecrow93 stumbled across a faded wall marking which appeared to be that of the fictional corporation Abstergo featured in the Assassin's Creed franchise. A few hours later, another Reddit user found the same wall, along with a note clearly establishing a link between the events portrayed in Far Cry 3 and the Assassin's Creed franchise. As the screenshots and additional reports continued to roll in, it quickly became clear that this was no hoax.

So how exactly did the developers connect the Far Cry and Assassin's Creed franchises?

With a warning:

"Masahiro, I question using these so-called scientists. They speak of Pieces of Eden and Edison's electrical experiments into "genetic memory". I do not trust them, and I have locked lab access. To access or exit the secured room use this code 122112. Please exercise caution around these foreign devils.

- Hayato"

For those who aren't familiar with the series, "genetic memories" are how protagonist Desmond Miles lives through the adventures of his assassin ancestors in Assassin's Creed. The Assassin's are a secret organization, tasked with preventing the Abstergo Corporation  and the Templars from acquiring the Pieces of Eden. More elaborate (spoiler filled) descriptions of each can be found at the Assassin's Creed Wiki.

So, what do you think about Ubisoft's apparent decision to place the Far Cry and Assassin's Creed franchises in the same universe?
