UPDATE: The first trailer for "Star Trek Into Darkness" is here! Click here to watch it!

With a trailer and extended preview for "Star Trek Into Darkness" coming out in December, what can we expect from the movie? The 2009 surprise hit, "Star Trek," directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy and John Cho as Sulu, appease both longtime Trekkies and casual moviegoers, and made a new generation of "Star Trek" fanatics. But what exactly will the film focus on?

It's really hard to say. Everyone involved has been extremely tightlipped about the plot of the film, especially Benedict Cumberbatch's role as the villain.

Benedict Cumberbatch, from the Emmy-winning BBC show "Sherlock" (if you haven't seen "Sherlock," watch it on Netflix as soon as you finish this article) will definitely play the villain in "Star Trek Into Darkness" but what exactly is his role? We have no idea, but it probably won't be the "Star Trek" classic, Khan Noonien Singh, from "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn." Many people involved in the movie, from producers to Simon Pegg, who plays Scottie, have adamantly denied the rumors that Cumberbatch will play Khan. They might just be trying to throw us off, but I think that it makes sense that Abrams and co. won't use Khan as their villain in this movie. They're trying to make a unique film, distant from the original "Star Trek" series staring William Shatner, and using Khan in the second movie would be exactly what they did originally.

But, Karl Urban, star of the Judge Dredd reboot, "Dredd," commented in an interview on Cumberbatch's portrayal of the unnamed character, saying "He's awesome, he's a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary." Um...Gary Mitchell? Who? For those of you who don't know, Gary Mitchell is a character from the original "Star Trek" series, the one that started the entire saga, and was in an episode called "Where No Man Has Gone Before." The plot of the episode is about the Enterprise crew finding a record log of a lost ship at the literal end of the universe. On the planet, they find Gary Mitchell, one of Kirk's best friends from the Academy. However, while the crew is on the planet, something weird happens: Mitchell develops tremendous psychic powers and calls himself a god. What results is an epic battle between Mitchell and Kirk and Spock, and ends when Kirk has to kill his friend for the benefit of the universe.

The idea of Abrams using Mitchell as his villain is certainly intriguing, as it gives room for more character development, in addition to a lot of action packed scenes. Honestly, Urban's Mitchell reference might just be another ploy at trying to trick fans, but that's the best indication as to who Cumberbatch will play in the "Star Trek" sequel. Other than that, we don't really know much, other than the entire cast from the 2009 "Star Trek" will be returning.
