iOS 6 Untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 5 News: Find Out Who is Working on a Jailbreak for iPhone 5, 4S and Other Apple Devices

Jailbreak Updates

If you are a iPhone 5, iPhone 4S or other Apple device user who is stuck on iOS 6 without an untethered jailbreak, then chances are you weren't especially fond of my last post. This weekend I published a story which got a few iOS 6 users and Cydia app store fans in an uproar as I posed the conjecture that an untethered iOS 6 Jailbreak for iPhone 5 and A5 devices will likely not be available until Christmas.

I still hold to this theory as yesterday's iPad mini event revealed the new device will be utilizing an A5 chip, leading me to believe Apple is not going to allow a jailbreak without a fight.

At this time, Apple is working on an iOS 6 update-- iOS 6.0.1--which is projected to arrive in just a few weeks, sealing up deficiencies such as horizontal lines on the screen when the keyboard app is open, problems with camera's flash not going off, improved Wi-Fi support, a fix for the Passbook pass details from the lock screen, and a resolution to issues with Exchange meeting cancellations.

In addition, there have been some sources which report that iOS 6.1 is also in the works, though that will likely not ship by the Nov 2nd release of the latest Apple devices such as iPad Mini.

For this reason I beleive, as noted in my earlier piece, that jailbreakers around the globe are holding their breath and wondering whether exploits discovered will soon to be patched, leading to a delay of an untethered iOS 6 Jailbreak for iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and other Apple devices.

I know many of you may be feeling discouraged by this "hurry up and wait" situation, so I thought I would take a moment to fill you in on just who exactly is working the iOS 6 Jailbreak.

Indeed, as prominent jailbreak tweeter @veeence noted earlier this week, fewer players are working the jailbreak than have in the past. Still, there may be some underground folks we don't even know about...including one I will introduce you to in this article.

So who are the players? Well two of them you are likely familiar with and one is a new face.

If you have been following my posts, the first you know is Wang aka @planetbeing, member of the iPhone Dev-Team and the mastermind who reverse-engineered an iPhone to run alternative operating systems, such as Android and the Linux kernel.

Last week he tweeted that he had a tethered jailbreak nearly ready, but would not be releasing it as the exploits found were more valuable for working towards an untethered iOS 6 jailbreak for iPhone 5. Here is what he said:

Since that time, @planetbeing has posted nothing more on his work, progress or hang-ups he may be running into which, in my opinion, may be a good thing; it means either he's working or waiting to see what iOS 6.0.1 will bring.

The second player on the scene is a newly-formed team claiming the hashtag #jailbreakdev for their updates. Though the team is new, one of the guiding members is well-known in the jailbreak community.

Joshua Hill is his name and he goes by the twitter handle @p0sixninja. Hill was a founding member of the Chronic Dev Team before separating this year, and was largely responsible for the development of the greenp0ison jailbreaking tool. The other two members are lesser known but still noteworthy--@CA13RA1 and @j1m0nz.

It appears that @CA13RA1 may be doing the bulk of the work as much of the updates and crash reports we have seen thus far have come from his Twitter account, though it seems @j1m0nz has taken on the roll of PR, answering questions while @p0sixninja offers guidance. The guys see pretty determined to get this jailbreak out and so they are definitely a bunch to keep an eye on.

Here are a few of the tweets exchanged by the group recently:

The last player is a complete unknown and goes by the Twitter handle @JHethop. He has been tweeting that he too is in the iOS 6 untethered jailbreak game. Here is a sample of what he's shared with followers on Twitter:

Personally, I'm not sure what to make of this kid...seems he's claiming a lot when even those who are more experienced are holding back on their updates. Still, it can't hurt to follow and keep an eye out on his "progress". If he turns out to be all talk and no untethered then we've really lost nothing.

Either way, in looking at the tweets, one thing is clear: iOS 6 is proving a beast to compromise, and as such, we should all just relax, stop asking when an iOS 6 untethered jailbreak for iPhone 5, 4S and other A5 devices will be ready, and just root those attempting it.
